As the 2011 calendar comes to a close, MURedHawks.com wants to take this opportunity to reminisce on some of the recent highlights.
The Athletic Communications staff recently sat down to compile a Top 10 listing of the biggest news stories for Miami Athletics. It was no easy decision, but we think we hit the mark on a great year.
Feel free to post your comments to @miamiredhawks on twitter and we will start sharing them.
Each day between Dec. 22 and Dec. 31, a different highlight of 2011 will be presented. Today, we continue the countdown with the No. 7 story on our list.
Simpson Earns MAC Pitcher of the Year Honors
Softball player Jessica Simpson capped one of the greatest seasons in Miami history on May 11, when the Mid-American Conference named her Pitcher of the Year. She was the first RedHawk to earn the award.
She was 27-15 overall with a 1.57 ERA, throwing 15 shutouts. She set single-season school records in several categories, including strikeouts (317), shutouts (15), wins (27), appearances (48), starts (40), complete games (38) and innings pitched (298.1). On May 6, Simpson tossed her first career no-hitter against Northern Illinois and was named MAC East Division Pitcher of the Week a record seven times this season.
