As the 2011 calendar comes to a close, MURedHawks.com wants to take this opportunity to reminisce on some of the recent highlights.
The Athletic Communications staff recently sat down to compile a Top 10 listing of the biggest news stories for Miami Athletics. It was no easy decision, but we think we hit the mark on a great year.

To get us started, we list some honorable mentions and the No. 10 accomplishment.
Not everything noteworthy could make our list, so here are some that caught our eyes for honorable mention:
- The ultimate goal of every Miami student-athlete is to earn a degree. RedHawks celebrated spring and winter commencements.
- Football shared the annual AFCA Academic Award with Boise State as the top program in FBS (STORY)
- Nick Harwell enjoys a record-setting season and earns All-American honors.(STORY)
- Miami earns the MAC's inaugural Institutional Sportsmanship Award (STORY)
- Maria Fantanarosa earned her 200th win as Miami's women's basketball coach(STORY)
- Anca Dumitrescu was named MAC Women's Tennis Coach of the Year (STORY)
- Julian Mavunga and Maggie Boyer each reached the 1,000 point plateau during the current basketball season (Mavunga recap) (Boyer recap)
- Melling, Weisenburger chosen in annual Major League Baseball Annual Draft (STORY)
- Athletic Director Brad Bates named president of the Division I-A Athletic Director's Association

SEVERAL REDHAWKS EARN INVDIVIDUAL INVITES TO NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS
Several RedHawks earned invitations to compete at NCAA Championships during the past year.
Kelsey Vehr started the postseason parade, earning a spot in three events at the Women's Swimming Championships in Austin, Texas. Senior golfer Nathan Sutherland was selected to compete at an NCAA regional for the second straight season. He competed at the Central Regional at the Wolf Run Golf Course in Zionsville, Ind. in May. In track and field, freshman Tori Paterra and redshirt junior Rachel Patterson both earned a spot in the NCAA Outdoor Championships, hosted by Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. Paterra competed in the javelin, while Patterson ran in the 5K as both earned Honorable Mention All-America.
