Miami Defeats Northeastern, 75-55

OXFORD, Ohio--From the opening tip-off, it was clear that Monday night would be Miami's night. The women's basketball team (8-3) took down the Northeastern Huskies (1-9) by a score of 75-55 at Millett Hall in a game that never saw the RedHawks trailing. Junior forward Kirsten Olowinski led the way for Miami with her fifth double-double in the past six games, finishing with 19 points and 12 rebounds.
The game had a historic mark with 5:25 left in the second half. Senior guard Maggie Boyer sank the first of her two free throws, giving her 11 points for the contest and 1,000 for her career. She became the 20th player in program history to reach 1,000 career points.
Both teams struggled from the floor early in the game, going a combined 1-19 in the game's first five minutes that saw Miami take a 3-1 lead. Junior guard Courtney Osborn recorded the RedHawks' basket on her first attempt from behind the arc of the night.
After a Northeastern bucket tied the game up at 3-3 with 14:36 remaining in the half, Miami tore off a 7-0 run to give the team a 10-3 lead with 11:35 left in the half. The scoring run was highlighted by four points from Olowinski and a 3-pointer from sophomore guard Hannah Robertson.
Miami and Northeastern both found their respective offensive flows after the first ten minutes of play, and both team traded points while the score reached 21-14 in favor of Miami with 4:52 left in the half. Sophomore guard Haley Robertson in particular found her shooting stroke, nailing two of her three attempts from long range.
The RedHawks went into halftime with a 31-18 lead over the Huskies. Olowinski led all players with 10 points and eight rebounds in the first half, while Osborn led all players with five assists. Miami's defense, however, really stole the show in the period. The RedHawks held Northeastern to just 21 percent shooting, with six of the Huskies' 28 shots finding the bottom of the net.
To start the second half, Olowinski pick up where she left off, scoring two quick baskets to increase the Miami lead to 35-18. Boyer added to the RedHawk scoring run with eight points of her own. The points from Olowinski and Boyer added up to a 12-1 Miami run to open the second half.
Northeastern went on a 14-5 scoring run of its own to bring the score to 48-33 with 10:43 remaining in the game. By this time, Olowinski had grabbed her tenth rebound of the night to record her 22nd career double-double.
Each team added ten more points apiece to bring the final score to 75-55 in favor of Miami. In addition to Olowinski's 19 points, Haley Robertson and Boyer added 13 and 12 points, respectively. The 13 points from Robertson gave her a new career-high. Osborn finished with a game-high eight assists for the RedHawks, who had 22 total assists on their 26 made baskets.
Dani Iervolino led Northeastern with 12 points, while Jamie Conroy and A'lece Mark each added 11 points. Christine Huber led the Huskies with nine rebounds.
Miami's next game is at home against Chicago State on Wednesday, Dec. 28 at 7 p.m. The RedHawks will look to finish their five-game home stand on a high note, having already won their previous four games.
