It's a busy week for Miami athletics as several of the teams have key matchups coming up. Plus fans get a chance to meet the future RedHawks as the second annual RedHawk Recruiting Live webcast takes place this Wednesday from 10 a.m.-1 p.m.
Miami University Athletics, who last year became the nation's first school to feature a live webcast of National Letter of Intent Day, will be back on-line next Wednesday, Feb. 2, to announce the RedHawks' newest recruits. RedHawk Recruiting Live!, again originating at the football offices inside Yager Stadium, begins at 10 a.m. and runs until 1 p.m. on Miami athletics' website -- www.MURedHawks.com (Release)
The men's basketball team (9-12, 4-3 MAC) split its two games last week, defeating Central Michigan on the road Thursday, but falling to Western Michigan in overtime on Saturday at Millett Hall. On Thursday, Miami broke a 56-56 tie with 5:13 to play by scoring 12 straight points, leading to a 68-58 victory over Central Michigan Thursday night at McGuirk Arena. Antonio Ballard recorded a double-double of 18 points and 11 rebounds, while Nick Winbush chipped in 20 points and nine boards. (Recap)
Wearing throwback jerseys with numbers representing some of the greatest Miami players in school history, the RedHawk men's basketball team jumped to an 18-point lead on Saturday at Millett Hall, but a hot shooting Western Michigan team was able to come back in the second half and eventually win the contest, 73-68, in overtime. WMU shot 51.5 percent (14-for-27) in the second half to get back into the game and tie the score. The Broncos then hit four out of five shots (80 percent) in the overtime period to steal the victory from the RedHawks. Julian Mavunga led Miami with 22 points. (Recap)
Fans still have the opportunity to bid on the throwback jerseys worn during the Western Michigan game. Bidding ends on the five jerseys representing the retired numbers on Wednesday at 4 p.m. The auction closes on the remainder of the jerseys on Saturday at 5 p.m.
The men's basketball team continues play at Millett Hall Tuesday when it hosts Ball State for a 7 p.m. contest. The RedHawks will be on the road Saturday when they travel to Eastern Michigan for a 4:30 p.m. game.
The women's basketball team (10-11, 2-6 MAC) had a tough week, dropping games to Ball State and Eastern Michigan. A tough shooting night resulted in a 66-49 loss to Ball State Wednesday in Muncie. Miami was only able to convert 16-for-59 (27.1 percent) of its baskets, while Ball State hit 26-for-58 (44.8 percent) of its shots. Courtney Osborn led the RedHawks with 22 points, while Kirsten Olowinski recorded her ninth double-double of the season with 12 points and 12 rebounds. (Recap)
A 12-point, second-half flurry pulled Miami within two points of Eastern Michigan, but it was not enough as the Eagles posted a 72-62 win at Millett Hall on Saturday afternoon. Kirsten Olowinski posted a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 17 rebounds, while Maggie Boyer paced the RedHawks with 19 points and Courtney Osborn tallied 16 points and six rebounds. The women's basketball team continues its three game homestand when it welcomes Central Michigan to Millett Hall Wednesday at 7 p.m. and hosts Toledo on Saturday. That game (which was previously scheduled for 2 p.m.) has been selected for broadcast on SportsTime Ohio and has a new start time of noon.
No. 11/13 Hockey (14-9-5, 11-7-4-2 CCHA) went to shootouts in both games against Notre Dame last weekend, claiming victory on Friday and falling on Saturday. Senior Andy Miele registered four points, sophomore Reilly Smith scored twice and Miami tallied three power plays goals as the RedHawks played Notre Dame to a 5-5 overtime draw but earned the extra point in the standings with a shootout win Friday night at the Joyce Center. Senior Pat Cannone scored the shootout clincher in the fourth round for Miami. (Recap)
On Saturday the RedHawks played the Irish to a draw for the second straight night after sophomore Reilly Smith knotted the game at 2-2 late in the third period to force overtime. Notre Dame won the shootout, 1-0, however, to earn the extra point in the standings. (Recap)
A huge series takes place this weekend at Steve Cady Arena when Miami welcomes No. 6/6 Michigan to town. Friday's contest begins at 7:35 p.m. while Saturday's puck drop is slated for 5:05 p.m.
The women's tennis team is off to its best start in its 37-year history at 4-0 with road victories over Cincinnati and Butler this weekend. Miami rebounded from a doubles loss to win five of six in singles and claim a 5-2 victory over the Bearcats Friday night at the Western Hills Tennis Club. Against the Bulldogs on Saturday, the RedHawks won two of three doubles matches and five of six during single play to earn the victory. (Cincinnati Recap) (Butler Recap)
Miami travels to Big Ten member and 30th-ranked Iowa on Friday, then plays Kansas State from the Big 12 in Iowa City on Saturday.
Late victories by butterflyer Maegan O'Connor (Fishers, IN), diver CORY BANGS (Monument, CO) and the 400 freestyle relay team broke a close dual meet wide open as the women's swimming team defeated defending MAC champion Toledo, 163.5 to 136.5, at MU's Nixon Aquatic Center. Top-ranked in the latest CollegeSwimming.com/CSCAA Mid-Major Division I Poll, the RedHawks improved their overall record to 9-1 and their Mid-American Conference mark to 4-0. (Recap)
Miami wraps up the dual meet portion of its season next Saturday at home against arch-rival Ohio. The first event begins at 1 p.m.
Junior diver Jim Beres won both the one- and three-meter events, but host Eastern Michigan's swimmers won the remaining 14 events and defeated the men's swimming team by a score of 180-116 on Saturday. Beres defeated teammate Chris Hoppler in the three-meter event, 350.03 to 332.55, and scored 347.33 in the one-meter competition. (Recap)
Miami hosts Ball State next Saturday at the Nixon Aquatic Center. The first event begins at 3 p.m.
The women's track and field team competed in the Indiana Relays in Bloomington, Ind. over the weekend. On Friday, junior Caroline Kwateng was Miami's top finisher as she took runner-up honors in the 600m run in a personal-best 1:38.30. Classmate Diona Graves placed third in the 200m dash seeded finals in a season-best 25.28 (Recap). On Saturday, they broke a school record in the 4x800m relay that had stood for 25 years while five RedHawks posted top-five individual finishes. (Recap)
The RedHawks return to the state of Indiana this weekend, Feb. 4-5, for the Meyo Invitational, hosted by Notre Dame.
The men's track and field team competed in the Findlay Classic in Findlay, Ohio on Friday and Saturday. The meet is the first of three indoor meets the RedHawks are allowed to compete in under NCAA rules in preparation for their outdoor campaign. Junior transfer Jordan Goffena led the way on Friday in his first competition wearing the red and white by winning the pentathlon with a score of 3,846 points, which breaks the facility record. He posted personal bests in the 60m hurdles (8.21 seconds) and the long jump (7.07m/23-2.5) while nearly matching personal bests in the high jump and 1000m run. The men's track and field team will take this weekend off, but it will return to action for the second of its three indoor meets in two weeks at the Cedarville Collegiate Invitational Feb. 11, hosted by Cedarville University.
The synchronized staking team was off this week. Miami next takes the ice when the collegiate team competes at the Midwestern Championships this Saturday and Sunday (Feb. 5-6) and the senior team travels to the Spring Cup in Milan, Italy, Feb. 11-13. The junior team is next in action at the U.S. National Championships March 3-5.
Congratulations go out to Randy Hollowell for being named the 2010-11 Red & White Club Don Loss Volunteer of the Year winner. Hollowell is known for his helpful demeanor and for his willingness to assist. He has played a key role in assisting the Blue Line Club, and the Red & White Club, with his leadership, in special events, communication and messaging to fans. (Release)
Finally, make sure to check out the Super Bowl this Sunday to see a pair of former RedHawks in action. Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger will lead the Pittsburgh Steelers against the Green Bay Packers, which feature former Miami tight end Tom Crabtree.
