Happy New Year! Although students are still on holiday break, several Miami student-athletes were hard at work as three teams competed last week while Miami also announced its new football coach. With the new year in full swing, several other teams also resume action this week, including the football team, which wraps up its season with a bowl game.

On Friday, Miami Director of Athletics Brad Bates announced the hiring of Don Treadwell (Miami '82) as Miami's 34th head football coach. (RELEASE) Treadwell, a wide receiver at Miami from 1978-81, comes to Oxford after four years as the offensive coordinator at Michigan State. He also served two years as an assistant coach at Miami in 1992 and 1993. Treadwell will be formally introduced to Miami fans and media at Miami University's Voice of America Learning Center in West Chester on January 10 at 5:45 p.m.

Miami is waiting to hold a formal introduction because the team arrived in Mobile, Ala. on Jan. 6 (RELEASE) and will play in the GoDaddy.com Bowl against Middle Tennessee State on Thursday at 8 p.m. at Ladd-Peebles Stadium on ESPN. With a new head coach in place for the 2011 season, Miami Athletics has announced that it will extend its discount ticket packages through Jan. 14. (RELEASE) To reserve your tickets today, call the Miami Athletic Ticket Office at 513-529-HAWK (4295) between the hours of 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. Tickets can also be reserved in person through the Miami Athletic Ticket Office, which is located in Millett Hall.

The sixth-ranked Miami hockey team (11-6-3, 8-4-2-1 CCHA) returned to the ice last week after a 25-day layoff, as the RedHawks dominated No. 9 Maine, 4-1, in the opening round of the Florida College Classic in Estero, Fla. (RECAP) Senior forward Andy Miele scored twice in the victory while head coach Enrico Blasi earned his 250th career win. In the championship game against St. Cloud State, Miami rallied from a 4-1 third-period deficit to close within one but was unable to find the equalizer, falling 4-3, despite a goal and an assist from both senior forward Pat Cannone and sophomore forward Reilly Smith. (RECAP) Congrats to Reilly Smith for being named to the All-Tournament Team! Miami resumes CCHA action this weekend, Jan. 7-8, traveling to Ohio State for its only regular-season meetings with its in-state rival. Friday's game is at 7:35 p.m. and will be on CBS College Sports Network while Saturday's game is slated for 7:05 p.m.
Prior to heading to Columbus, the Miami hockey team and the Blue Line Club will host their annual Rico's Ristorante, where players serve dinner to community members, on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Bell Tower Place on Miami's campus. Dinner is $10 for adults and $5 for kids (12 and under). (RELEASE)
Men's basketball (5-9) dropped a pair of games last weekend. On Thursday, the `Hawks received 19 points from senior forward Nick Winbush and a career-high 18 points from senior forward/guard Antonio Ballard, but Miami couldn't overcome a sluggish first half and fell at Belmont, 83-72. (RECAP) On Sunday, the RedHawks faced their third top-three opponent of the year in No. 3 Kansas and fell to the Jayhawks, 83-56. (RECAP) Men's basketball will take the week off before opening Mid-American Conference play at rival Ohio on Sunday, Jan. 9 at 2 p.m. The game will be televised on Sports Time Ohio.

Women's basketball (8-5) went 1-1 in its two games last week. The RedHawks knocked off local rival Cincinnati, 65-56, Sunday in its non-conference finale as junior Maggie Boyer led the way with 18 points. (RECAP) On Thursday, Miami fell at Chicago State, 94-84, as the Cougars used a 17-2 run in the second half to open a tight game and capture the win, despite 29 points from sophomore Courtney Osborn. (RECAP) Women's basketball opens Mid-American Conference play this week with a pair of road games, traveling to Kent State Wednesday at 7 p.m. before facing Bowling Green at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
The women's swimming and diving team returns to the pool Wednesday as well as it faces Davidson and Marshall in a double-dual in Boca Raton, Fla. beginning at 10 a.m.
Miami's junior synchronized skating team takes to the ice Jan. 7-8 at the World Junior Team Selection Competition in Fond du Lac, Wis.
