FINDLAY, Ohio - Three RedHawks competed on the opening day of the Findlay Classic, hosted by the University of Findlay at the Malcolm Athletic Center, as the Miami University men's track and field team unofficially began its 2011 season. The meet is the first of three indoor meets the RedHawks are allowed to compete in under NCAA rules in preparation for their outdoor campaign.
Junior transfer Jordan Goffena (Sidney, Ohio) led the way in his first competition wearing the red and white by winning the pentathlon with a score of 3,846 points, which breaks the facility record. He posted personal bests in the 60m hurdles (8.21 seconds) and the long jump (7.07m/23-2.5) while nearly matching personal bests in the high jump and 1000m run. He took first in four of the five events (1000m run, 60m hurdles, long jump and shot put) while his score was four points shy of automatically qualifying for the U.S. Indoor Championships in the heptathlon (the pentathlon is not contested) but he still could qualify with an at-large bid.
Freshman Taylor Celestin (Mason, Ohio) finished fourth in the pentathlon with a score of 3,064 points in his first collegiate action.
Senior Adam Ruiz (Mascoutah, Ill.), who missed most of last year with an injury, was Miami's only other competitor Friday, as he placed 21st in the weight throw with a heave of 14.22/46-8, despite having little experience in the event.
The rest of the RedHawks begin competition Saturday on the final day of the Findlay Classic. Action begins at 9:30 a.m. with the long jump, which features five `Hawks, while action on the track begins at 11:25 a.m. with the 60m hurdles prelims followed by the 60m dash prelims. The final field event of the competition is the pole vault at 2:30 p.m., which has three RedHawks entered, while the meet concludes with the 4x400m relay at approximately 5:25 p.m.
