Three RedHawks Earn Four Event Wins at Findlay Classic

FINDLAY, Ohio - Freshman Jahquil Hargrove won a pair of events in his Miami University men's track and field debut while fellow freshman Sam Spallinger and sophomore Jack Spilman also took first in events Saturday on the second and final day of the Findlay Classic, hosted by the University of Findlay at the Malcolm Athletic Center. The meet is the first of three indoor meets the RedHawks are allowed to compete in under NCAA rules to prepare for outdoor competition.
The RedHawks grabbed the top three spots and four of the top five in the triple jump led by Hargrove (Norristown, Pa.) with a jump of 13.76m/45-1.75. Senior Matt Losi (Buffalo, N.Y.) was the runner-up (13.42m/44-0.5) while sophomore John Cantwell (Holland, Pa.) was third (13.21m/43-4.25) and freshman Calen Settles (Cincinnati, Ohio) was fifth (13.18m/43-3).
Miami took the top two spots in the long jump with Spallinger (Pandora, Ohio) finishing first with a leap of 6.96m/22-10 while Cantwell was second with an indoor personal-best jump of 6.72m/22-0.75.
Spilman (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) won the 600m run in 1:22.89 while freshman Kevin Brown (Lewis Center, Ohio) was two spots back in third in 1:23.41. In the 500m run, Hargrove again took top honors in 1:08.60 in his first collegiate race. Freshman Wade Coffin (Willoughby, Ohio) had a strong showing in the 800m run in his Miami debut, taking third in 1:57.40.
In other field action, redshirt junior Matt Rudin (Middleburgh Heights, Ohio) was the runner-up in the seeded pole vault competition with a vault of 4.75m/15-7. Senior David Serrano (Pickerington, Ohio) placed third in the high jump with a clearance of 1.97m/6-5.5 while freshman Matt Gambill (Dover, N.H.) was seventh with a jump of 1.92m/6-3.5.
Back on the track, senior Justinn Eddie (Cleveland, Ohio) and Spallinger qualified for the 60m dash finals with Eddie placing 10th in 7.21 and Spallinger crossing in 15th. Eddie also claimed fifth in the 400m dash in 51.48 while sophomore Nathan Davis (Upper Arlington, Ohio) was ninth in 52.80.
Eddie, Davis, Hargrove and sophomore Alex Trent (Middletown, Ohio) combined to take fourth in the 4x400m relay in 3:30.30, while the host Oilers took first.
The RedHawks return to action for the second of their three indoor meets in two weeks at the Cedarville Collegiate Invitational Feb. 11, hosted by Cedarville University.
