The winter sports season is in full swing with most of the Miami teams in action, plus the first "spring" sport had its first official action over the weekend. Meanwhile, yesterday's NFL results mean a RedHawk alum is about to have something Super happen.
The men's basketball team (8-11, 3-2 MAC) split a pair of games this week, defeating Akron at home and losing to Kent State on the road. On Wednesday, Julian Mavunga scored a career high 25 points and Nick Winbush and Antonio Ballard each had a double-double as the RedHawks knocked off Akron, 84-76. Mavunga, who hit 6-of 11-from the field and 12-of-15 free throws, added six reboundsand four assists. Ballard tallied 19 points and 10 rebounds, while Winbush chipped in 11 points and 12 boards. Yesterday, Winbush tallied his second straight double-double (15 points and 12 rebounds), but Miami could not overcome 22 turnovers in a 78-57 loss to the Golden Flashes. Chris McHenry and sophomore guard Orlando Williams also reached double figures in scoring with 13 and 12 points, respectively. (RECAP)
It will be a busy week as the RedHawks travel to Central Michigan Thursday, then host their throwback game Saturday at 4:30 p.m. against Western Michigan. Don't miss this historical event by capitalizing on the Friends and Family package and remember to bid on the game-worn jerseys (RELEASE) .
The women's basketball team (10-9, 2-4 MAC) wasn't as fortunate, dropping both games this week. The RedHawks fell to Ohio 69-56 at home on Tuesday and 71-64 at Northern Illinois on Sunday. Miami opened an early lead against the Bobcats, but surrendered a 9-0 run midway through the first half and never recovered. Maggie Boyer, who took over the point guard position after Courtney Osborn went down with an injury, led the RedHawks with 12 points. (RECAP)
On Sunday, a 15-2 NIU run that started with nine straight points was too much for Miami to overcome, though they later closed the gap to six. Boyer led the RedHawks with 18 points, while Kirsten Olowinski finished with a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds. (RECAP)
The women are at Ball State on Wednesday before opening Saturday's doubleheader with a 2 p.m. game against Eastern Michigan.
Hockey (14-9-3, 11-7-2-1 CCHA) earned a split against Michigan State this weekend, falling 7-4 on Friday before rebounding 4-0 on Saturday. In the opener, the RedHawks outshot the Spartans 46-22, but allowed their most goals in CCHA play since a 9-3 loss at Ohio State on Oct. 21, 2004. Andy Miele scored twice and Pat Cannone and Justin Vaive added a goal each. (RECAP).
The team had something to prove on Saturday and delivered. With Head Coach Rico Blasi making a drastic lineup change, Connor Knapp pitched his second shutout of season, while Carter Camper and Miele each finished with a goal and two assists. Chris Wideman earned his second multi-point game of the season with a goal and an assist. (RECAP).
This weekend, Miami hits the road again, this time to Notre Dame for games Friday and Saturday.
Women's Indoor Track spent the weekend at Kent State for the All-Ohio Championships. On Friday, freshman Erica Mudd finished fifth in her first career pentathlon with 3,394 points, the seventh-highest total in school history. (RECAP) On Saturday, Junior Rachel Patterson led the way for the RedHawks, earning eight points by taking runner-up honors in the 5000m run in 17:10:90, just one second out of first place. Already the school record holder in the event, Patterson's time was the eighth best in school history. (RECAP)
The women's team competes at the Indiana Relays Friday and Saturday, while a contingent of men's runners will travel north to the Findlay Classic.
Women's Swimming needed a win in the final event Saturday to defeat Ball State 152.5 to 147.5 in Muncie, Ind. Trailing by four points going into the last race, the 400 freestyle relay team of Bekka Westrick, Maddie Kete, Katie Arlinghaus and Chelsey Bruington took the event by almost three seconds. Each swimmer bested her opponent on the respective legs. (RECAP)
This Saturday, the women's team hosts Toledo at 1 p.m., while the men travel to Eastern Michigan.
The junior synchronized skating team competed in Salzburg, Austria over the weekend, finishing fifth at the Mozart Cup. The RedHawks placed seventh in the short program portion on Saturday, earning 39.78 points to Pat Benetar's "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" and "Heartbreaker". The team improved its standing by placing fifth in the free skate on Sunday, registering a score of 83.00.
The next synchronized skating action takes place Feb. 5-6, when the collegiate team heads to the Midwestern Championship.
Turning the page to Spring already, the tennis team (2-0) opened its dual match schedule by sweeping local rivals Xavier and Dayton at the Riverside Racquet Club. In each contest, the RedHawks won two of three double matches to gain the first point, then swept the singles play. Most impressive were Anastasia Dracheva, who lost just one singles game all weekend and was a member of the point-clinching doubles team, and Stephanie Danesis, who was undefeated at No. 1 singles and doubles. Finally, Miami University will be represented by a player from both the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Green Bay Packers in Super Bowl XLV on February 9 at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger directed the Steelers past the New York Jets in yesterday's American Football Conference Championship Game, while tight end Tom Crabtree's Packers defeated the Chicago Bears in the NFC title contest. We'll have an expanded story next week about Roethlisberger and Crabtree on MURedHawks.com.
