KETTERING, Ohio - Senior Rachel Patterson won the individual title at the Dayton Flyer 5K Challenge to lead the Miami University women's cross country to victory Saturday morning at Indian Riffle Park in its season-opening meet. The RedHawks have now won the race four straight years.
Patterson (Rochester, Mich.) finished in a course-record time of 17:25 to win the race while fellow senior Amanda Mirochna (Naperville, Ill.) took third in 17:46. Junior Maggie Bingham (Carmel, Ind.) placed fifth overall in 18:01 while redshirt junior Kelley Miller (Dublin, Ohio) crossed six ticks later in sixth.
The RedHawks also claimed spots nine through 11, as senior Katie Lenahan (Cincinnati, Ohio) finished in 18:32 while freshman Kate Carter (Ann Arbor, Mich.) was 10th in her first race in the red and white a second later and redshirt sophomore Jillian Dickman (Madison, Ohio) placed 11th in 18:35.
"Overall, they all ran very well. They went out and hammered away," head coach Kelly Phillips said. "They took some chances, which was good, and tried to do things to see how it worked and they were successful, so I was very pleased. They went out hard and they did a nice job. They were very fired up."
Miami won the meet with 24 points while Dayton took second with 33, having runners take second and fourth overall. IUPUI was third while Wright State, Cleveland State and Morehead State finished in spots fourth through sixth, respectively, among Division I teams.
The RedHawks return to action next Saturday when Miami hosts the Miami Invitational at 10 a.m. on Miami's Western Campus. It will be the team's first home meet since 2006.
