Competitive Battle Results in 1-3 Defeat Against USF

LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Miami volleyball team concluded play at the Kentucky Classic with a tough 1-3 (25-20, 25-27, 22-25, 23-25) defeat against USF Saturday evening. The RedHawks fall to 1-5 on the year, while the Bulls improve to 2-3.
At the conclusion of the tournament, Amy Raseman was named to the All-Tournament team.
A kill and a service ace by Christina Menche gave the RedHawks a 4-1 lead in set one. Miami forced USF into several attack errors early as it pushed the lead to 12-7. With the score 13-11 in favor of the RedHawks, two kills by Michele Metzler helped increase the advantage to 17-13. The Bulls would get as close as 17-19, but Menche, Metzler, Raseman and Colleen Loftus each scored kills off Michelle Mangia assists to allow Miami to close out a 25-20 win.
Mangia was able to put down a couple quick tip kills as the RedHawks opened a 9-6 lead in set two. A 13-7 run by USF gave the Bulls their largest advantage of the set at 19-16. With the score 23-20 in favor of USF, a Bulls service error, a kill from Mangia, a Raseman service ace and a kill from Loftus gave Miami set point at 24-23. Unfortunately, the RedHawks were unable to secure the next point and with the score tied at 25, USF scored the final two points to take the 27-25 victory.
Miami fell behind, 5-10, to begin set three. A 6-4 run keyed by two Christina Menche kills got the RedHawks to within three at 11-14. The teams traded points until it was 21-18 in favor of USF. The Bulls scored two of the next three points to expand the advantage to 23-19. Two kills from Loftus and a USF attack error made the score 22-23, but those would be the last points the RedHawks would score as the Bulls won the third set, 25-22.
Tied at eight in the fourth set, Madison Dodd recorded two kills and teamed with Metzler to put down two double blocks as Miami took a 12-8 lead. The RedHawks eventually stretched the advantage to 20-14 thanks to another kill from Dodd, along with kills from Metzler and Mangia. USF scored three of the next four points to pull within three, but Raseman and Metzler teamed up on a double block to make the score 22-17 in favor of the RedHawks. With the score 23-19, the Bulls were able to finish off the match by closing on a 6-0 run to win the set, 25-23.
Loftus finished the match with a double-double, featuring a career-high 12 kills to go along with 14 digs. Raseman led the RedHawks with 13 kills, while Mangia and Lisa Treadway each had 12 digs. Miami hit .188 for the match, compared to .144 for the Bulls.
Miami returns to Millett Hall for its home opener against Wright State on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
