One RedHawk team extended its win streak to six straight, one won its first tournament of the season, while another knocked off its second ranked opponent of the season. With nearly every Miami team on the road last weekend, several are in action in Oxford this weekend and Miami Athletics honors its annual award winners on Saturday afternoon.
Congratulations to the golf team, which earned its first victory of the 2010-11 season last Tuesday, when it won the Louisville Intercollegiate. The RedHawks shot a team score of one-over par 289 in the third round to finish the event at seven-under par overall and win by three strokes over Illinois State. Seniors Nathan Sutherland and Michael Drobnick were the top individual finishers for Miami, tying for sixth at two-under par. Picking up a pair of wins over the weekend, the women's soccer team (9-2-0; 2-0-0) extended its win streak to six straight. Miami scored early and held on late Friday evening as the RedHawks downed Kent State, 1-0, in the Mid-American Conference opener for both teams. Miami struck quickly as freshman Katy Dolesh headed home her fourth goal of the season less than five minutes into the contest. (RECAP) Dolesh scored two more goals as Miami picked up a 4-3 win over Buffalo on Sunday. (RECAP) Miami rounds out a six-match home stretch this week, hosting Central Michigan at 4 p.m. Friday, Oc. 1 and Eastern Michigan at 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 3.
Miami (2-2; 1-0 MAC) fell behind 21-0 after the first quarter and never recovered Saturday in a 51-13 loss at 24th-ranked Missouri. Senior Trevor Cook kicked two field goals and sophomore quarterback Austin Boucher completed a touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Jamal Rogers to account for the RedHawk scoring. (RECAP) The RedHawks return home to host Kent State on Oct. 2 for Family Weekend. After dropping a 2-1 overtime heartbreaker to the Ohio Bobcats Saturday afternoon in the Mid-American Conference opener for both teams (RECAP), the field hockey team (6-3; 1-1 MAC) came back to knock off No. 17 Kent State in overtime on Sunday afternoon, 4-3. The Golden Flashes took a 2-0 lead on the RedHawks, but Miami scored three unanswered goals to lead with just under 13 minutes to play. KSU knotted the game with 2:31 remaining in the contest to send it to overtime, but a goal by Emily Gruesser at the 72:07 mark gave Miami the win. (RECAP) Miami is in action this week at Ball State on Friday and returns home to host Missouri State at noon Sunday, Oct. 3.
Volleyball (5-10; 0-2 MAC) dropped a pair of matches over the weekend. The RedHawks lost in three sets at Buffalo to open Mid-American Conference play last Friday. (RECAP) Miami also lost at Akron in three sets on Saturday. (RECAP) The RedHawks travel to Bowling Green for a 7 p.m. match on Thursday before returning home to host Northern Illinois at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 3.
For the second time in three weeks, senior Rachel Patterson was named the Mid-American Conference Women's Runner of the Week last week. She has now garnered the award in both weeks in which she has raced this season. Patterson had a strong showing at the Spartan Invitational as she led Miami for the second time in 2010 and ran to a runner-up finish against her toughest competition of the season. (RELEASE)
Redshirt sophomore David Eichenberger was tabbed the Mid-American Conference Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week last week. Eichenberger led the way for Miami for the first time in his career at the Spartan Invitational, as he placed 11th in a personal-best time of 25:04 out of 288 runners. (RELEASE)
Both Miami's men's and women's teams return to action Friday, Oct. 1 as the RedHawks run at the All-Ohio Championship in Cedarville, Ohio. The men run at 2 p.m. while the women will follow at 2:45 p.m.
Softball opened the fall exhibition softball season with a pair of wins over local rivals Saturday. The RedHawks defeated Dayton, 6-2, and followed it up with a 7-6 victory over host Wright State in the nightcap. (RECAP) On Sunday, the RedHawks split with Eastern Kentucky, winning the opener, 6-2, before falling in the nightcap, 5-3. (RECAP) Miami continues its fall exhibition season next Sunday when it travels to Columbus to participate in the annual Ohio Collegiate Charity Classic. Earlier in the week, softball participated in Bras Across the Bridge, a fundraising effort for breast cancer awareness.

The hockey team is in action this weekend, hosting Waterloo in an exhibition at 3:05 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 3.
Women's tennis opened its fall season last weekend at the 2010 Hoosier Classic. The RedHawks return to the courts this weekend (Oct. 1-3) at the Notre Dame Tournament.

Five student-athletes earned Miami University Athletics' most prestigious annual awards and will be honored at the Miami versus Kent State football game on Saturday, Oct. 2. Nathan Sutherland (men's golf) was named the Male Athlete of the Year, while Kelsey Vehr (women's swimming and diving) seized Female Athlete of the Year honors for a second straight year. Kelsey McHugh (women's cross country/track and field) was named the Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year, while Paul Krebs (men's cross country/track and field) captured Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year accolades. Alicia Hogl (softball) earned Miami's highest honor for a female student-athlete, the Leann Grimes Davidge Memorial Award. (RELEASE)
