OXFORD, Ohio - Indiana was able to spoil the final match of the Miami Best Western Sycamore Inn Invitational Saturday evening, defeating the RedHawks, 3-0 (25-12, 25-21, 25-20). Miami falls to 5-8 overall, while the Hoosiers improve to 12-0.
The conclusion of the event was exciting for the RedHawks however, as Amy Raseman was awarded a spot on the All-Tournament team, and head coach Carolyn Condit was presented with a framed jersey commemorating her 1,000th game coached that she achieved earlier this season.
After falling 25-12 in set one, Miami put up a great fight in each of the next two sets. Two kills from Jenn Caylor helped lead the RedHawks to a 6-4 lead to begin set two. A 7-2 run by Indiana put the Hoosiers in front, 11-8. Miami responded with a 4-1 run of its own to tie the set up at 12. The Hoosiers would eventually pull in front, 21-16, but the RedHawks scored four consecutive points off a service error, an attack error, an ace by Jackie Lang and a kill from Colleen Loftus to pull within one at 20-21 and force an Indiana timeout. The Hoosiers regrouped out of the break and took four of the next five points to earn the 25-21 victory.
Lisa Treadway had two kills as Miami played to a 7-7 tie early in set three. Two kills by Raseman helped keep the RedHawks in the set, but Indiana went on a 12-7 run to take a 19-14 advantage. After a Miami timeout, Raseman and Treadway each scored another kill, while Madison Hardy put down a service ace as the RedHawks attempted a comeback. It was not to be though and Indiana won the final set, 25-20.
Raseman led the RedHawks with nine kills and three blocks, while Treadway had a career-high six kills. Jackie Lang led Miami with 10 digs.
The RedHawks begin Mid-American Conference play on the road next week. On Friday, Miami will make the long trip to Buffalo for a 7 p.m. match against the Bulls. On Saturday, Sept. 25, the RedHawks will be at Akron for a 7 p.m. contest.
