Several teams concluded their seasons at MAC and NCAA championships last weekend, while one other team finishes up the regular season this week and several individuals move on to postseason action in the coming weeks.

The tennis team got off to a good start Friday in the program's second NCAA Tennis Championship appearance but dropped a hard-fought 4-0 decision to sixth-seeded Northwestern at the Christie Tennis Center. Miami battled in doubles. Although the RedHawks had an 8-1 loss at No. 2 doubles, Miami kept it tight in the third flight but fell 8-5 and was leading 7-6 at No. 1 doubles before it was abandoned. (RECAP) The RedHawks ended their season with an 18-7 record, their highest win total since the 1988-89 campaign.
The women's track and field team finished sixth at the MAC Championships. Junior Kelley Miller claimed the 1500m title in 4:30.54, while redshirt sophomore Rachel Patterson was the runner-up in the 5000m run in a personal-best time of 16:34.06, which is the second fastest time in Miami history. Senior Amanda Mirochna won the steeplechase title for the second straight year. Miami broke the school record in the 4x400m relay as sophomores Diona Graves and Rachael Clay, redshirt sophomore Tasha Profit and junior Ruth Rasch combined to take second in 3:42.72, breaking the previous mark that was set in 2004 by over two seconds. Miller and Mirochna were named First-Team All-MAC, while Patterson garnered Second-Team All-MAC honors. Mirochna, Katie Lenahan, Miller and Patterson are all in contention to qualify for the NCAA East Preliminary Round, which will be held May 27-29 in Greensboro, N.C., while the final field will be announced Friday.

Men's track and field also finished sixth at the MAC Championships. The RedHawks were led by second-place finishes in the high jump from junior David Serrano and junior Michael McCarty in the long jump. Both earned Second-Team All-MAC accolades for their efforts. McCarty (long jump), Serrano (high jump), junior John Gausmann (discus), sophomore John Brockman (javelin) and redshirt sophomore Matt Rudin (pole vault) are all in contention to earn a spot in the NCAA East Preliminary Round May 27-29 in Greensboro, N.C., while the final field will be announced Friday. Softball (33-24) finished its season at the MAC Championships last weekend. Five RedHawks were named to the all-conference teams. Senior shortstop Sarah Billstrom, junior second baseman Meghan Mawn and senior pitcher Meredith Linch were named to the first team. Sophomore third baseman Daniela Torres and sophomore pitcher Jessica Simpson were named to the second team, while senior left fielder Alicia Hogl captured the Nan Harvey Sportsmanship Award. (RELEASE) Additionally, Billstrom was named East Division Player of the Week, while Linch was named MAC East Division Co-Pitcher of the Week following a 6-0 week to conclude the regular season. (RELEASE) Playing well past 1 a.m. due to rain delaying the start of the game, Miami nearly made a comeback from a six-run deficit, but fell 6-5 to Northern Illinois in the RedHawks' opener at the MAC Championship on Wednesday. (RECAP) Miami emphatically kept its season alive Thursday with a 17-1 five-inning victory over Buffalo in the consolation bracket. The 17 runs scored set a new MAC Tournament record, breaking the record of 16 which had been set the game before by Ball State. It also was the most runs scored by the RedHawks since scoring 18 in an 18-4 win over Baldwin-Wallace in 1979. The win was the 114th in the past four years for the senior class, making them the winningest class in school history. (RECAP) Freshman designated player Taylor Rice drove in sophomore right fielder Jordan McElroy with the game-winning hit in the ninth inning as Miami collected a 5-4 come-from-behind win over Central Michigan Friday afternoon. (RECAP) Miami's run in the MAC Tournament came to an end with a 5-4 loss to Northern Illinois Friday night. Hogl and McElroy were each named to the All-Tournament Team. (RECAP)
Baseball (25-26, 10-14 MAC) picked up a pair of mid-week wins over Cincinnati before dropping three games at Buffalo last week. Miami used a five-run fifth inning to break open a one-run contest and received strong relief pitching over the final 4.1 frames to earn a 7-4 victory over host Cincinnati Tuesday evening. (RECAP) For the second consecutive day, Miami defeated local rival Cincinnati as the RedHawks used strong defense and seven Miami hurlers limited the Bearcats to just one run en route to an 8-1 victory Wednesday evening at McKie Field at Hayden Park. (RECAP) After falling behind to host Buffalo 9-0 through four innings Friday at Amherst Audubon Field, Miami clawed back to within two late but was unable to catch the Bulls, ultimately falling, 16-10, in the series opener between the teams. (RECAP) The RedHawks put the tying run on third base with just one out in the ninth inning, but Buffalo was able to record the final two outs without allowing the run to score to defeat Miami, 3-2, Saturday afternoon. (RECAP) Buffalo jumped out to a 5-0 and the RedHawks were never able to recover as the Bulls took the series finale between the teams, 5-1, Sunday afternoon. (RECAP) Congratulations to junior infielder Jon Edgington has been tabbed the Mid-American Conference Male Scholar Athlete of the Week for the week of May 3-9. (RELEASE) Miami concludes the regular season this weekend, hosting Ohio in a three-game series May 20-22. Game times for Thursday and Friday are set for 6 p.m. with Saturday's game scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.

Last week, Miami announced the 2010-11 hockey schedule, which features home series against New Hampshire, Michigan and Notre Dame, plus a trip to the Florida College Classic in December. (RELEASE)
Also last week, the NCAA released the latest Academic Progress Rates (APR). Two Miami teams--men's cross country and men's golf--registered perfect 1000 APR scores. Eight other Mid-American Conference universities collected 12 recognitions. (RELEASE)
