Last Monday the entire athletic department gathered to honor its seniors at the annual Senior Dessert. While things begin to wind down with postseason banquets and end of year awards and final examinations on the horizon, the spring sports teams remain in full gear.
Golf's Andrew Mock and softball's Lindsay Randall captured the Spirit of Miami awards at the Senior Dessert, which are presented to both a male and female senior student-athlete for each of their exceptional enthusiastic commitments to their teams. (RELEASE) Women's cross country captured the Hal Jasper Community Service Award. The men's cross country team earned the Top GPA Award for the men's teams, while the women's tennis team earned it for the women's teams and also captured the Most Improved GPA Award.

Women's tennis (13-6; 6-0 MAC) remained undefeated in Mid-American Conference action with a pair of key road wins last weekend. The RedHawks picked up a 4-3 win at Buffalo on Friday (RECAP) before serving Akron its first MAC loss and just second loss of the season with a 4-3 triumph on Saturday. (RECAP) Miami has won 15 consecutive regular-season MAC matches and seeks to go undefeated in MAC action for a second straight year, rounding out the regular season at Eastern Michigan Friday and at Toledo Saturday. Junior Megan Martzolf continued her impressive play, moving to 19-0 at No. 3 singles this season.

The golf team finished second among a 10-team field at the Hawkeye Invitational last weekend. Four RedHawks finished among the top 20, including juniors Nathan Sutherland and Michael Drobnick, who tied for seventh place at two-over par. (RECAP) Miami competes in its final event before the MAC Championships when the RedHawks hit the links at the Boilermaker Invitational this weekend.
Senior Amanda Mirochna and sophomore Maggie Bingham grabbed the top two spots, respectively, in the 3000m steeplechase to help the women's track and field team finish fourth at the All-Ohio Championships, hosted by Ohio University Saturday. The RedHawks racked up 89 points to take fourth place out of 16 teams. (RECAP) Miami returns to action next weekend as it hosts its second and final home meet of the season--the RedHawk Invitational--Saturday, April 24. Some RedHawks will also compete at the prestigious Penn Relays from April 22-24. Additionally, Nicki Mitchell and Rachel Patterson were named to the 2010 Academic All-Mid-American Conference Indoor Track & Field Team. (RELEASE)
Junior Michael McCarty won the decathlon Saturday at the All-Ohio Championships, hosted by Ohio University, to lead a trio of RedHawks in the top four in the multi-event competition, as the men's track and field team placed fifth at the meet. The RedHawks totaled 79 points. (RECAP) The RedHawks return to action next weekend as they host their second and final home meet of the season--the RedHawk Invitational--Saturday, April 24.
Baseball (16-19; 4-8 MAC) scored eight runs in the ninth inning against Xavier in the opening round of the Joe Nuxhall Classic to pull out a 12-11 win and advance to the championship game. (RECAP) Miami fell short in the title game against the Bearcats, being edged 3-2. (RECAP) Junior left fielder Kyle Weldon drove in a career-high six runs, including his first collegiate grand slam in the fifth inning, which broke a tie and helped Miami win the series finale at Western Michigan, 10-3, Sunday. Freshman starter Mac Thoreson tossed his first career complete game--Miami's first of the season--while allowing just three runs on eight hits and fanning a career-high seven Broncos with just two walks to earn the win. (RECAP) The RedHawks were edged by the Broncos 5-4 on Friday (RECAP) and 11-10 on Saturday. (RECAP) Miami hosts five games this week, beginning with Indiana on Tuesday and Xavier on Wednesday before hosting Akron in a three-game series this weekend. Tuesday's game is the RedHawks' "Think Pink" for breast cancer awareness game. All game times are 6 p.m., except for Sunday, which is 1 p.m.

Also surrounding this Saturday's baseball game, Marilyn Young and the Young Family, along with Miami University, will host a special"Dave Young Memorial Celebration" on Saturday, April 24 at McKie Field at Hayden Park at 2 p.m. The event will include words from the Young Family, as well as some of Dave's closest friends. The Celebration will precede Miami's home baseball game on the 24th at 6 p.m. In lieu of flowers and for those interested, the family has asked that contributions be made to the Dave Young Memorial Fund for Athletics at Miami University. Checks can be made payable to Miami University, including the name of the fund in the memo portion, and sent to Miami University, 725 E. Chestnut Street, Oxford, OH 45056.
Softball (20-19; 5-5 MAC) split a doubleheader with Buffalo on Sunday. After falling, 4-1, in the first game, the RedHawks took a 2-1 decision in the nightcap. (RECAP) Miami and Kent State battled through two rain delays and 19 innings worth of softball Friday, but 32 runners left on base by the RedHawks proved costly as the Golden Flashes won the first game 5-1 and the nightcap 2-1 in 12 innings. Meredith Linch pitched arguably the best game of her career in the second game. She went 11.1 innings, giving up only four hits and one earned run while striking out eight. (RECAP) Miami returns to action Friday through Sunday when it hosts the Strikeout Cancer Weekend at the Miami Softball Stadium. On Friday, Toledo will be in town for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. The RedHawks will then take on Bowling Green in single games on Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.

Field hockey, volleyball and soccer also were in action last weekend with field hockey and soccer returning to the fields this weekend with more spring exhibition games.
All three synchronized skating teams will be taking part in the annual Spring Ice Show this weekend at the Goggin Ice Center. Themed "The Cady Awards!" the Spring Ice Show starts at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and at 4 p.m. on Saturday. Click HERE for ticket and show information.
In addition to all the athletic competition last week, several student-athletes were taking part in community service efforts around Oxford and also displaying their research efforts at the annual Poster Presentations.

Caleb Bostic (football), Courtney Clarke (soccer), John Eick (men's swimming), Kevin Koncelik (football), Stephanie Laser (soccer), Adam Martin (men's track and field/cross country), Adam Ruiz (men's track and field), Gary Steffes (hockey) and Jerrell Wedge (football) all presented research projects at the Poster Presentations last Wednesday at Shriver Center.

Members of the synchronized skating, volleyball, football and men's swimming and diving programs partnered with the Greek Community for the Oxford Clean-Up on Saturday afternoon, while members of the football team also participated in the MS Walk last weekend.
