Miami Wins Seven Track Events to Take Miami Invite Title

OXFORD, Ohio - Hosting the first of two meets in 2010, the Miami University women's track and field team used seven track event titles, including both relays, to win the 25th annual Miami Invitational by 90 points Saturday at George Rider Track.
The RedHawks totaled 188 points to claim the meet title while Hillsdale finished second with 98 points. Mid-American Conference foe Ball State took third with 88 points while Grand Valley State and Wright State rounded out the top five, respectively. Local rivals Dayton (sixth), Butler (seventh) and Xavier (10th) also competed at the meet.
Junior Kelley Miller (Dublin, Ohio) won the 800-meter run with a personal-best time of 2:10.16, which ranks her fourth all-time among RedHawks, while also earning 10 points toward the team title. In the 1500m, junior Katie Lenahan (Cincinnati, Ohio) and senior Amanda Mirochna (Naperville, Ill.) claimed the top two spots, with Lenahan crossing in a personal-best 4:31.66, which ranks her seventh all-time at Miami, while Mirochna clocked in at 4:32.50. Redshirt sophomore Rachel Patterson (Rochester, Mich.) earned another 10 points for the 'Hawks with a win in the 5000m run in 16:50.31, winning by over 13 seconds.
Sophomore Diona Graves (Fenton, Mo.) won the 200-meter dash in a personal-best 24.82, which ranks her eighth all-time at Miami while senior Margarita Pogorelov (Bat Yam, Israel) placed fourth in 25.59 to give the RedHawks 15 points combined. In the 100-meter dash, Graves finished second in 12.09 while Pogorelov took third in 12.12 and freshman Layne Baggett (Pittsburgh, Pa.) fifth in 12.35, as Hillsdale's Cathryn Humphries was .03 of a second ahead of Graves to place first.
Sophomore Rachael Clay (Rossford, Ohio) crossed first in the 400-meter dash in 56.70 while junior Ruth Rasch (Bellbrook, Ohio) took fourth (57.81) and redshirt sophomore Tasha Profit (Chicago, Ill.) placed fifth (58.16), totaling 19 points for the RedHawks. Redshirt freshman Katie Scannell (Cortland, Ohio) took third in the 400-meter hurdles in a season-best 1:03.60 for another six points.
The RedHawks won both relays for 20 points, as Pogorelov, Baggett and Graves teamed with sophomore Lindsay Forconi (Vermillion, Ohio) to win the 4x100 relay in a season-best 46.93, while Pogorelov, Profit, Rasch and Clay took first in the 4x400m relay in another season best of 3:49.56.
In the high jump, senior Nicki Mitchell (Lake Forest, Ill.) was the runner up in the high jump with a leap of 5-5.75 (1.67m) while fellow senior Kristen Mathews (Griffith, Ind.) placed fourth (5-3.75/1.62m). Sophomore Hannah Tabler (Wapakoneta, Ohio) set a personal best in the pole vault with a clearance of 11-3.75 (3.45m), which ties her for sixth on the school's all-time list of performers. Mitchell and junior Hope Alexander (Wilmington, Del.) placed second and third, respectively, in the triple jump, to pick up another 14 points for the team.
Alexander also placed fourth in the hammer throw on Friday night with a toss of 162-6 (49.53m) while sophomore Samantha Gable (Greenfield, Ind.) took sixth with a distance of 159-4 (48.58m). In the shot put, sophomore Alexandra Roberts (Hilliard, Ohio) claimed third with a heave of 45-5.25 (13.85m) while Gable was just behind in fourth with a personal-best toss of 45-3.5 (13.80m), which moves her into seventh on Miami's all-time list.
The RedHawks compete next weekend at the All-Ohio Championships hosted by Ohio University April 16-17 in Athens, Ohio. The RedHawks then host the RedHawk Invitational, their second home meet of 2010, the following weekend.
