Hockey defeats Michigan to win the NCAA Tournament Midwest Regional and advance to the Frozen Four |
MIDWEST REGIONAL CHAMPIONS! Grinding out a 3-2 double-overtime win against Michigan to win the NCAA Tournament Midwest Regional, the RedHawk hockey team (29-7-7) is headed BACK to the Frozen Four April 8-10 at Ford Field in Detroit! Junior forward Pat Cannone accounted for both RedHawk goals in regulation but it was sophomore forward Alden Hirschfeld who punched in the game winner in the second overtime to send Miami to its second consecutive Frozen Four appearance. (RECAP) Miami posted a 2-1 win over Alabama-Huntsville in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday evening. (RECAP) Miami takes on Boston College at 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 8 in the national semifinals. The game will be televised on ESPN2.

Miami had one other individual in postseason competition last week as diver Cameron Horner competed at the NCAA Championships last weekend. Horner finished 23rd in the three-meter diving event. He was the first Miami diver to compete at the NCAAs since 1975. (RECAP)

The women's tennis team (9-5; 2-0 MAC) extended its streak of Mid-American Conference regular-season wins to 11 straight with 5-2 wins over both Western Michigan (RECAP) and Bowling Green (RECAP) to open league play last weekend. Junior Megan Martzolf was perfect on the weekend, going 2-0 at No. 1 doubles with sophomore Stephanie Danesis and posting a 2-0 mark at No. 3 singles last week. Marzolf is 14-0 at No. 3 singles this season. Miami travels to Northern Illinois for its lone match this week.
The men's track and field team showed little signs of rust at the 2010 outdoor season-opening Vanderbilt Black and Gold meet Saturday, winning 10 of 18 events. Sophomore John Brockman highlighted the meet, taking first in the javelin with a personal-best throw of 199-06 (60.82m), which ranks him fourth all-time at Miami, as he won by nearly 50 feet. In the 110m hurdles, junior Michael McCarty also posted a top-10 mark, taking first in 14.47 seconds, which ranks him eighth all-time. (RECAP) Miami returns to action this Saturday at the Oliver Nikoloff Invitational, hosted by the University of Cincinnati.
Strong winds at the Vanderbilt Black & Gold meet Saturday were not enough to slow down the women's track and field team, which opened its 2010 outdoor campaign by earning six event victories. Junior Kelley Miller wasted no time making an indent on the Miami record books, as she broke teammate Amanda Mirochna's mark of 4:26.77 in the 1500m run by finishing first in 4:26.47. (RECAP) The RedHawks return to action this weekend at the Tiger Track Classic, hosted by Auburn University.

Baseball (10-12; 1-2 MAC) went 2-3 last week. The RedHawks split a home-and-home series with Eastern Kentucky with each winning on their home field. The Colonels topped the RedHawks 7-3 on Tuesday (RECAP), but Miami came back with an 11-3 win at McKie Field at Hayden Park on Wednesday. (RECAP) Miami opened MAC play with a three-game series with Central Michigan Friday and Saturday. The Chippewas took the opening game 5-2 on Friday. (RECAP) Miami captured the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, 6-3, before falling in the finale, 5-1. (RECAP) Saturday was Military Appreciation Day as Miami wore camouflage hats for game two and recognized the U.S. armed forces by having Miami's Navy and Air Force ROTC present at the game, as well as former RedHawk and current U.S. Marine Captain George Stegmiller throw out the first pitch prior to the night cap. Miami hosts Dayton at 6 p.m. Wednesday before hitting the road for a three-game series at Ball State this weekend.
Congratulations to sophomore third baseman Daniela Torres, who was tabbed MAC East Division Co-Player of the Week last week. (RELEASE) After playing six games the previous week, softball played just one contest last week. The RedHawks (11-4) traveled to Purdue last Wednesday, falling to the Boilermakers 6-4. (RECAP) Miami hosts Dayton in a doubleheader on Thursday at 2 p.m. before opening MAC play at Ball State Saturday and Sunday.
The golf team returns to action this weekend at the Irish Creek Collegiate in Charlotte, N.C. April 3-4.
Women's soccer earned a 2-0 spring exhibition win over Xavier on Saturday. (RECAP) Field hockey and volleyball also are in spring exhibition action in Oxford this weekend. The RedHawk field hockey team hosts Ohio State at 10 a.m., Indiana at 1 p.m. and Ohio at 3 p.m. on Saturday. Miami's volleyball team hosts Northern Kentucky at 10 a.m., Wittenberg at 11:30 a.m. and Ohio State at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
Football continues with its spring practices and held its first spring scrimmage last Saturday. (RECAP)
