While much of the university was enjoying a quiet week of spring break, Miami athletics was full throttle with postseason awards, postseason tournaments, spring break trips packed with competition and individuals moving on to NCAA Championships.

With wins on Friday and Sunday in the best-of-three series, the RedHawk hockey team (26-6-7) heads to Joe Louis Arena in Detroit for the CCHA Championships this weekend. Miami faces Michigan at 8:05 p.m. on Friday, March 19. The game will be televised on the Big Ten Network. On Saturday, the RedHawks will face either Northern Michigan or Ferris State. The consolation game is set for 3:35 p.m. and the championship game is scheduled for 7:35 p.m. Four RedHawks were named to All-CCHA teams while another earned All-Rookie Honors. Forward Jarod Palmer and goaltender Cody Reichard were members of the first team, while forwards Andy Miele and Tommy Wingels picked up second-team honors. Carter Camper received honorable mention recognition. (RELEASE) Defenseman Joe Hartman earned All-Rookie Team honors. (RELEASE) Miami posted a 6-2 win in Friday's second round game against Ohio State. (RECAP) The RedHawks battled back to force overtime on Saturday but came up short, 5-4. (RECAP) On Sunday, Miami clinched a berth in the CCHA Tournament semifinals with a 2-1 win over the Buckeyes. (RECAP) Miami will be well represented this week at the CCHA Awards Banquet with finalists for four of the six annual awards. Finalists include Reichard for RBC Player of the Year, Enrico Blasi for Coach of the Year, Wingels is a contender for Best Defensive Forward, while Will Weber is on the list for the Best Defensive Defenseman Award. Brick Street in Uptown Oxford is the host for Miami's Official NCAA Ice Hockey Selection Show Watch Party. Join the RedHawks as they find out their "The Road to the Frozen Four" Sunday at 11:30 a.m. ESPN2 is scheduled to be in the house and to talk with Head Coach Enrico Blasi live during its broadcast.
Brick Street is donating 15 percent of all sales from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. to the Brendan Burke Memorial Scholarship, so make plans to enjoy lunch with Miami Hockey.
Cameron Horner advances to compete in the NCAA Championships |
Congratulations to sophomore diver Cameron Horner, who becomes the first Miami diver in 35 years to compete in an NCAA meet. Horner placed fourth in the three-meter event at the NCAA Zone C meet to cement his qualification. He will compete at the NCAA Championships in Columbus March 25-27. (RELEASE)
Women's swimmer Kelsey Vehr will compete at the NCAA Championships this weekend having qualified in the 100 and 200 breaststroke events and the 400 individual medley.
Men's basketball advanced to the semifinals of the Mid-American Conference Tournament for the 18th time in program history. Behind a 27-point performance by senior guard Kenny Hayes, Miami topped Buffalo in the quarterfinals, 73-59. (RECAP) Miami (14-18) came up short in the semifinals, falling to Ohio, 54-42. (RECAP) Two RedHawks were named to All-MAC teams. Hayes earned first-team distinction, marking the seventh straight year at least one Miami player has been named to the first team, while sophomore forward/center Julian Mavunga earned honorable mention accolades. Congratulations to Courtney Osborn, who became the first Miami women's basketball player to capture MAC Freshman of the Year honors and also was named to the All-MAC Third Team. (RELEASE) Osborn also was named to the MAC All-Freshman Team along with teammate Kirsten Olowinski. After advancing to Cleveland with a first-round win over Northern Illinois, Miami (9-22) fell to No. 1 seed Bowling Green in the quarterfinals, 91-58. (RECAP)
After returning from spring break trips last week, both the softball and baseball teams host their home openers this week. Softball is scheduled to host Western Illinois in a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, while the baseball team is set to host Northern Kentucky on Wednesday at 3 p.m. Softball also hosts the Miami Invitational Friday, Saturday and Sunday with Robert Morris, Michigan State, Canisius and Toledo competing in the tournament.
Baseball (6-7) went 4-0 last week. The RedHawks posted a 14-3 win over Lehigh on Tuesday (RECAP), a 14-10 win over Yale on Wednesday (RECAP) and captured a weather-shortened 4-3 win in six innings over Rhode Island on Thursday. (RECAP) The RedHawks had three games cancelled due to weather but scheduled in a game against Indiana in Gainesville, Fla., on Saturday, topping the Hoosiers 19-7. (RECAP)
Softball (8-10) posted a 3-3 record last week in Seattle, Wash. The RedHawks outlasted Seattle 1-0 in 10 innings on Wednesday (RECAP) before being edged 3-0 by defending national champion Washington on Thursday in the first game of the Husky Classic. (RECAP) On Friday, Miami notched a 4-1 win against Portland State before losing to No. 1 Washington, 6-3. (RECAP) On Saturday, the RedHawks again split a pair of games with a 6-3 loss to Portland State and a 2-0 win over Seattle. (RECAP)
Women's tennis (6-3) went 1-1 last week with a 7-0 win over SIU Edwardsville in Florida before suffering a 5-2 loss at Wisconsin Sunday. Junior Megan Martzolf continued to shine this season, running her record in dual matches to 10-0 with a pair of wins at No. 3. Junior Anastasia Dracheva also posted two singles wins last weekend at No. 1. The RedHawks returned to the national rankings last week at No. 74. Miami travels to Wilmington, N.C., for a pair of matches on Sunday against UNC-Wilmington and Georgia State.
The men's golf team also returns to action this week. Miami competes in the Rio Pinar Invitational Monday and Tuesday this week in Orlando, Fla.
