With the arrival of finals and the end of the first semester, it is a relatively quiet week around the Miami Athletic Department in terms of events.
Only two teams were in action last week and will be in action again this week.
Congratulations to junior forward Julian Mavunga who was named MAC East Division Co-Player of the week on Monday for his performances in Miami's two wins last week. Mavunga shot a scorching 73.3 percent from the field while averaging 16.5 ppg and 7.5 rpg in wins over Saginaw Valley and Troy last week. (RELEASE) Five players scored in double figures as the RedHawks (5-5) defeated Saginaw Valley 76-57 last Tuesday. (RECAP) Miami rallied from a 12-point deficit to defeat Troy, 80-73, its highest point total of the season. The RedHawks outscored the Trojans 9-0 over the final three minutes of the game to pull ahead for the win. (RECAP) Miami returns to action at Wright State at 7 p.m. Saturday before hosting Cincinnati at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 21.
Sophomore guard Courtney Osborn also captured MAC East Division Player of the Week honors this week for her efforts in a trio of RedHawk wins last week. Osborn averaged 25.0 ppg and shot 63.6 percent from the field, including 55.6 percent from 3-point range, for the week. (RELEASE) An unstoppable 3-point barrage and 56 percent shooting led Miami (6-3) to a resounding 89-63 victory over Marshall last Monday night. (RECAP) A great team defensive effort and 26 points from Osborn led Miami to a 67-61 victory at Indiana last Thursday. (RECAP) Junior Maggie Boyer scored a career-high 34 points, including 20 in the second half, to lead Miami to a 101-92 victory over Cal State-Bakersfield Saturday afternoon for the RedHawks' fifth consecutive win. (RECAP) Miami returns to action at Northeastern on Sunday afternoon.
Last week Miami's men's and women's swimmers also swept the weekly MAC awards. Junior James Beres and sophomore Leah Thornton MAC Swimming & Diving's Male and Female Athletes of the Week. Beres swept the Miami invitational, winning from both the one- and three-meter boards. On the one-meter, he set new MAC, pool and Miami records. He followed that up with a dominant performance on the three-meter, setting new records for the MAC, Miami and the Miami Invitational. Both scores also qualified him for the NCAA Zone Championships at the end of the season. Thornton helped lead Miami to the 2010 Miami Invitational team championship with three individual and two relay wins. Thornton took first in the 100-yard backstroke (54.94), 200-yard backstroke (1:57.83) and 200-yard butterfly (2:01.24), setting new school records in each event.(RELEASE)

Last Friday 68 athletes from nine sports-football, volleyball, soccer, field hockey, golf, women's cross country and track and men's cross country and track-received their letterwinner jackets at inaugural ceremony. (RELEASE)
