While most people in the country are looking forward to a few days off for turkey and Black Friday shopping, it's one of the busiest weeks of the year for the RedHawks. Seven events are slated for the next six days, with most of them in Oxford.
The football team (7-4, 6-1) continued its winning ways 19-14 Wednesday night at Akron as Trevor Cook kicked four field goals and Thomas Merriweather rushed for a career-high 141 yards. But the outcome wasn't sealed until Jordan Gafford pounced on a Jordain Brown-forced fumble at the Miami 8. (RECAP)
The RedHawks will play for at least a share of the MAC East Division championship on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Yager Stadium against Temple. You can accept the Big MAC Challenge by purchasing a four-pack of tickets and four McDonald's Extra Value Meals for just $29.95. Madison Hardy led Miami with a career-high 29 digs, while Amy Raseman added Miami with 16 kills. (RECAP) The RedHawks fought off two match points in the quarterfinals, stunning No. 3 Western Michigan 3-2 (12-25, 25-21, 25-22, 21-25, 16-14). Lisa Treadway recorded her first career double-double with a career-high 13 kills and 19 digs.
The tournament came to a close for Miami with a 3-0 (19-25, 19-25, 22-25) loss to Ohio in Saturday's second semifinal. Metzler became the 19th player in Miami history to record 1,000 career kills, finishing the match with 1,004. (RECAP)
Congratulations to senior Michele Metzler, who was named first-team All-MAC last week. She was a second-team pick last year and Freshman of the Year in 2007. RELEASE The regular-season concludes on Friday with a 7 p.m. home match against 18th-ranked Cincinnati.
The sixth-ranked hockey team (8-3-3, 6-2-2-1 CCHA) earned a two-game sweep over former assistant coach and player Chris Bergeron and his Bowling Green Falcons. On Friday, Miami scored three goals in the second period to break a 1-1 tie and held off a feisty squad 4-3 victory. Sophomore forward Reilly Smith matched his career high with three points, the third time he's done so this year, while senior forward Andy Miele dished out a pair of helpers to tie classmate Carter Camper for the national lead with 17 assists. A pair of defenseman also tallied goals for Miami, including sophomore Joe Hartman, who tied a career high with two points. (RECAP)
Saturday night, Pat Cannone had a hand in all three goals and Connor Knapp recorded his first shutout of the season in a 3-0 victory. The `Hawks controlled the contest, outshooting Bowling Green, 38-9, with the nine shots on goal setting a school record for the fewest shots allowed in a game. The previous low mark was 12 in 1981. Men's Basketball (2-2) started play in the O'Reilly Auto Parts CBE Classic with a regional game at Duke, then return to host six games in three days at Millett Hall. Nick Winbush scored 14 points and pulled in six rebounds but the defending national champions proved why they are the No. 1 in the country, 79-45, at Cameron Indoor Stadium. (RECAP)
On Saturday night, Julian Mavunga and Antonio Ballard lifted Miami to a hard-fought 59-58 victory over IUPUI. Each scored 12 points in a back-and-forth second half, finishing with 17 and 14 points, respectively. (RECAP) The next night, Miami erased an 11-point deficit in the first half to take a 30-25 lead into the locker room, but ultimately fell to Green Bay, 69-65. Winbush led the RedHawks with 15 points on 4-8 shooting, including 3-5 from long range, while Ballard added 14 points and six rebounds. Allen Roberts recorded five assists to set a new career high. The RedHawks face 18th-ranked San Diego State in the tourney's conclusion on Monday, then travel to Ohio State on Friday.
The women's basketball team (1-2) split a pair of games this week, earning its first win at Eastern Kentucky Wednesday before falling at Miami (Fla.) on Saturday. Kirsten Olowinski and Courtney Osborn each recorded double-doubles in a 76-59 win over the Colonels of Richmond, Ky. Olowinski led Miami with 19 points and 14 rebounds, while Osborn contributed 16 points and a career-high 12 assists, just one shy of the school record. (RECAP)
In a rare matchup between universities with the same name, the RedHawks fell to Miami (Fla.) 96-64 on Saturday. The Hurricanes used a 24-4 run around halftime to break open a close game. Osborn led the RedHawks with 13 points, while Olowinski grabbed 12 boards. (RECAP)
The RedHawks host a pair of games this week, facing Duquesne at 2p.m. on Wednesday and Stetson at noon on Saturday.
