It is a busy time of year for Miami Athletics. Two fall teams concluded the regular season with titles and are in the hunt for tournament championships, two others competed at their conference championships, while several other fall teams are winding down the regular season. Winter sports are heating up, and there are several home events this weekend--both exhibition and regular-season--for RedHawk fans.

Congratulations to head coach Jill Reeve and the Miami field hockey team, who are the Mid-American Conference Co-Champions, winning the regular season for the first time since the current format began in 1984! Miami (13-6; 8-2 MAC) posted a scorching 7-0 win over Ball State on Friday, which secured a first-round bye in the MAC Tournament. Senior Mary Hull scored two goals and had two assists in the win, becoming just the fourth player in program history to eclipse the 100-point plateau in her career. (RECAP) On Saturday, Miami clinched a share of the title with a 3-0 win against Central Michigan to finish the MAC regular season with an 8-2 mark, sharing the title with Kent State. Senior Kate Snyder had two goals and an assist, while Hull added a goal and an assist in the winning effort. (RECAP) The RedHawks will be the No. 2 seed in the MAC Tournament, advancing to the semifinals on Friday in Mt. Pleasant, Mich., facing the winner of the No. 3 seed Ohio vs. No. 6 seed Ball State matchup at 1:30 p.m. on Friday.

Congratulations to head coach Bobby Kramig and the women's soccer team, who captured the MAC East Division title with a thrilling 5-2 comeback win at Bowling Green on Thursday. After trailing 2-1, Miami (13-6-2, 5-4-2 MAC) knotted the game 2-2 in the 76th minute. The flood gates then opened for the RedHawks, notching three more goals in the next eight minutes to lock up a 5-2 win. (RECAP) Miami hosted Akron on Sunday in the MAC Tournament quarterfinal round. The No. 2 seed RedHawks defeated the Zips 2-0 to advance to the semifinals on Friday against No. 3 seed Central Michigan. (RECAP) The remainder of the MAC Tournament will be held Nov. 5-7 at Toledo.

Sophomore quarterback Zac Dysert and freshman wide receiver Nick Harwell connected for two passing touchdowns in the first half and senior running back Thomas Merriweather rushed for another score late, leading the football team (5-4; 4-1 MAC) to a 21-9 wind-swept victory at Buffalo Saturday afternoon. With the win, the RedHawks move into a three-way tie for first place in the Mid-American Conference East Division. (RECAP) (Video Highlights) Miami has 10 days off but continues a three-game road stretch when the RedHawks travel to Bowling Green for an 8 p.m. game on Wednesday, Nov. 10. The game will be televised on ESPN2.

No. 1 hockey (5-1-2, 3-0-1-1 CCHA) posted a 6-2 win over Lake Superior State on Friday. Senior captain Carter Camper and classmate Andy Miele led Miami with three and four points, respectively. Junior goaltender Cody Reichard stopped 16 of the 18 shots he faced to move to 4-0-0 on the year. (RECAP) (Video Highlights) On Saturday, Lake Superior State scored with less than 10 seconds remaining in regulation, forcing the top-ranked Miami hockey team to settle for a 2-2 overtime tie. The RedHawks' fifth shootout attempt by freshman Max Cook ended in a low, backhand shot that beat the Laker goalie five-hole and gave Miami the 3-2 advantage in the shootout. Miami Hockey is involved in an initiative called Swoop's Stoop, an effort to help sick children in surrounding area hospitals. The goal of the program is to get the ill kids out of the hospital and into the arena. Miami's hockey team plans to host a different group of children once every home stand. In addition to bringing the children to Steve Cady Arena, approximately once a month some of the RedHawk players and coaches will travel to the Cincinnati Children's Hospital and visit with the kids in their daily environment. Placing a pair of runners in the top six, the Miami University men's cross country team finished in a tie for second Saturday morning at the 2010 Mid-American Conference Championship held at blustery Pine View Golf Club in Kalamazoo, Mich. Redshirt sophomore David Eichenberger and senior Michael Perry both garnered First-Team All-MAC honors by placing in the top seven. The RedHawks split runner-up honors with Kent State as both squads totaled 94 points. (RECAP) The RedHawks next run at the Great Lakes Regional Championship on Saturday, Nov. 13 in Rochester, Mich. where they will try to earn a spot in the NCAA Championship.

The women's cross country team finished in third place Saturday morning at the 2010 MAC Championship hosted by Western Michigan. Senior Rachel Patterson garnered First-Team All-MAC accolades while junior Maggie Bingham and redshirt junior Kelley Miller were Second-Team All-MAC honorees. The RedHawks finished with 69 points, just being edged out by Central Michigan, who was the runner-up with 67 points. (RECAP) The RedHawks return to the course at the Great Lakes Regional Championship on Saturday, Nov. 13 in Rochester, Mich. where they will try to earn a spot in the NCAA Championship.

The golf team finished in sixth place at the Saint Mary's Invitational last Tuesday. Senior Nathan Sutherland finished at one-over par, tying for fourth overall. (RECAP) Sutherland also was tabbed the MAC Golfer of the Week for his efforts. It is the second time this season Sutherland has earned this award. (RELEASE) This concludes the fall portion of the season for Miami. The spring portion begins Feb. 21, 2011, when the RedHawks travel to Houston, Texas, for the Rice Intercollegiate.
Last week a pair of RedHawk volleyball players took home MAC weekly awards. Senior Michele Metzler was named East Division Offensive Player of the Week, while freshman Madison Hardy was named East Division Defensive Player of the Week. It is the first weekly player honor of their careers for both players.(RELEASE) After dropping the first set to Akron on Friday, Miami (9-16; 4-8 MAC) won three straight, capped by 25-15 and 25-17 wins in the final sets to defeat the Zips 3-1. (RECAP) On Saturday, the RedHawks suffered a three-set loss to Buffalo. (RECAP) The RedHawks return to action on Thursday when they host Bowling Green at 7 p.m for Senior Night.

The men's swimming and diving team (1-1-1) got first-place points from Chris Gunnels and Jason Hass, but Big Ten power Purdue rolled past the RedHawks Friday evening, 193.5 to 99.5. (RECAP) After falling behind early, Miami used a late-meet comeback to tie Cleveland State, 150-150 Saturday afternoon. Men's and women's basketball hold exhibition games on Saturday, Nov. 6 in final tune-ups before the regular season begins. The women host Tiffin at 2 p.m., while the men face Ohio Northern at 4:30 p.m. Admission is free to both games and open to the public. Synchronized skating has their Parents Weekend Exhibition performances at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 6 at Steve Cady Arena at the Goggin Ice Center. All three teams will be performing their competition programs. Admission is free.
The Red & White Club hosts its November luncheon at Millett Hall on Thursday, Nov. 4. In conjunction with basketball season tickets available for pickup at the event, featured speakers for the luncheon are head coaches Charlie Coles (men's basketball) and Maria Fantanarosa (women's basketball) along with senior forward/guard Antonio Ballard and junior forward Rachael Hencke.
On Wednesday it was announced that Miami University's student-athletes continue to graduate at a rate far exceeding the national average, according to the latest data from the NCAA. The NCAA's Graduation Success Rate (GSR) data indicates that Miami's student-athletes graduate at a rate of 86 percent, seven percent better than the national rate of 79 percent and tops among all Mid-American Conference institutions.
