As several of the fall sport seasons begin to wind down, one RedHawk team is in the hunt for a share of its first regular-season title, two are in the mix for MAC East Division titles and two others compete for conference championships this weekend.
Good luck to the cross country teams, who head to the MAC Championships hosted by Western Michigan this weekend. The races are on Saturday, Oct. 30 with the women's race scheduled for 11 a.m. and the men's race slated for noon. The women's team enters the race as the two-time defending MAC Champions.

It was lucky number 13 for hockey (4-1-1; 2-0-0 CCHA) last weekend, amassing 13 goals over two nights in the RedHawks' conference-opening weekend against Northern Michigan. Sophomore Reilly Smith tallied his first career hat trick while his senior linemates, Carter Camper and Andy Miele, added 10 more points between them to help the third-ranked RedHawks dominate Northern Michigan, 9-1, Saturday night at Steve Cady Arena. With 2:59 remaining in the first period, Miami junior assistant captain Will Weber suffered a cut to the neck. Weber was alert and in stable condition after being taken to the hospital following the accident. (RECAP) On Friday night, Miami blanked Northern Michigan, 4-0. Junior goaltender Cody Reichard led the RedHawks with his eighth career shutout and first of the season. (RECAP) The Red and White continue their home stand next weekend, hosting CCHA foe Lake Superior State on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 29-30. Congratulations to freshman golfer Austin Kelly, who was named the MAC Co-Golfer of the Week on Friday. (RELEASE) In only his sixth career collegiate event, Kelly earned his first title by capturing medalist honors at the Georgetown Intercollegiate last Tuesday. Kelly shot a third-round score of three-under par 68 to finish at eight-under par, winning the event by four strokes. As a team, Miami finish the tournament in second place. (RECAP) The RedHawks will finished the fall portion of the schedule Oct. 25-26 when they travel to California to take part in the St. Mary's College Invitational.
Playing on a FieldTurf style field for the first time this season, the field hockey team (11-6; 6-2) upended Missouri State, 3-2, in overtime on Sunday. Christine Brightwell scored the game winner on a penalty stroke. With the win, Miami keeps pace with Kent State in the battle for the regular season MAC crown. The Golden Flashes improved to 7-2 with an 8-1 win over Central Michigan on Sunday. The RedHawks can clinch a share of their first conference crown in school history with wins in their two remaining games next weekend. (RECAP) The RedHawks round out the regular season this weekend, hosting Ball State at 3 p.m. on Friday and Central Michigan at 1 p.m. Saturday. Saturday's game also will be Senior Day.

Freshman wide receiver Nick Harwell set a Miami record for receiving yardage in a game, hauling in 11 catches for 220 yards, but six turnovers stymied the RedHawks in a 34-13 loss to Ohio on Homecoming. Sophomore quarterback Zac Dysert tallied 322 yards passing, while sophomore C.J. Marck led all players with nine tackles and junior linebacker Jerrell Wedge had an interception, returning it for 28 yards. (RECAP) The RedHawks, Bobcats and Temple all sit atop the MAC East Division standings with one loss. Miami hits the road for three straight games before ending the season at home on Nov. 23 against Temple. Next week, the RedHawks travel to Buffalo for a 3:30 p.m. game on Saturday, Oct. 30. Northern Illinois scored twice in the first 10 minutes and the Miami women's soccer team (11-6-2; 4-4-2) was unable to dig out of the early hole, falling, 2-1, Friday afternoon at the Huskie Soccer and Track Complex. (RECAP) On Sunday, Miami got on the board first at Western Michigan when senior Sara Lund scored her first goal of the season just 6:28 into the game. The Broncos scored a goal in the 70th minute, evening the score at 1-1, and neither team was able to capitalize in overtime. (RECAP) Miami still remains in the hunt for the MAC East Division title and clinched a berth in the eight-team MAC Tournament with Sunday's tie. The RedHawks travel to Bowling Green for their final regular-season match on Thursday before beginning MAC play on Sunday with the quarterfinals. With a win against the Falcons, the `Hawks would clinch the No. 2 seed in the MAC Tournament and the outright MAC East title. A tie and an Akron loss or tie Thursday against Ohio would also give Miami the East title and the second seed. With a loss, the RedHawks would land as the No. 7 seed.
An aggressive offensive attack led by a career-high 18 kills from Colleen Loftus buoyed Miami's volleyball team (8-15; 3-7 MAC) to a 3-1 victory over Toledo last Saturday. Freshman Madison Hardy also set a career-high with 26 digs, 11 coming in the third set alone. (RECAP) On Friday evening, Michele Metzler and Loftus each recorded 11 kills, but it was not enough as Miami fell in three sets to Ball State. (RECAP) Miami host Akron at 7 p.m. Friday and Buffalo at 5 p.m. Saturday. The volleyball team will be holding a raffle at its matches this weekend to raise funds for their 2012 European trip. Seven different theme baskets have been created and are each filled with various gifts surrounding that theme. Tickets will be sold in the East Concourse of Millett Hall during each of those four games. At the conclusion of the match against Buffalo on Oct. 31, the winning tickets for each of the baskets will be drawn. Tickets are $1 apiece, and fans can buy six for $5.
Women's swimming and diving got its season underway last weekend. The RedHawks dropped their season opener at Purdue on Friday, 190-105. Kelsey Vehr and Megan Brunn won events against Purdue for the RedHawks. (RECAP) On Saturday, the RedHawks recorded 193-67 win at home against Xavier. Miami travels to Buffalo for a 1 p.m. meet on Saturday, in its MAC opener.
The men's swimming and diving team also began it season last weekend. The RedHawks hosted Xavier on Saturday, downing the Musketeers, 143-114. Miami travels to Purdue for a 6 p.m. meet on Friday and returns home to face Cleveland State at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Men's basketball hosts its BBQ and Basketball Tip-Off to the Season on Tuesday. The collegiate synchronized skating team will be performing this weekend during an intermission of Friday's hockey game.
Danielle Berkemeier '03 (women's soccer), Andrea Cunningham '03 (women's soccer), Walt Podgurski '69 (wrestling), Buddy Schultz '73 (baseball), Becca Williams '97 (women's track & field) and Mack Yoho '58 (football) were inducted into the Miami Athletic Hall of Fame last weekend, while statues for Carm Cozza, Paul Dietzel and Weeb Ewbank were unveiled at a dedication ceremony last Saturday.
