BEALLSVILLE, Md. - In only his sixth career collegiate event, freshman Austin Kelly earned his first title by winning medalist honors at the Georgetown Intercollegiate Tuesday. Kelly shot a third round score of three under par 68 to finish at eight under par. He won the event by four strokes. As a team, Miami posted a final round of 292 to finish the tournament in second place at five over par. Campbell won the Georgetown Intercollegiate with a score of five under par.
"What can you say about a kid in his sixth event pretty much going out and dominating the field," said head coach Casey Lubahn. "A lot of it has to do with the great work he's put in and the entire golf staff helping him. A lot of it also has to do with his attitude, which is overwhelmingly positive and he has a lot of self belief. So when the going got tough, he just kept getting tougher."
Blake English shot a 75 Tuesday to finish in a tie for 10th at one over par. Nathan Sutherland had the second-best score for Miami with a final round 72 to finish tied for 13th at two over par. Michael Drobnick was tied for 45th at 11-over par, while Matt Stasiak finished 61st at 19-over par.
"One of the things I told these guys is that good teams don't have to play great to beat people. I think that was evidenced this weekend. We weren't as sharp as I thought we needed to be, but we still found a way to finish second. That's a good thing."
The RedHawks will finish the fall portion of the schedule next week when they travel to California to take part in the St. Mary's College Invitational, Oct. 25-26. Miami will play 36 holes on Monday, Oct. 25 and follow it up with one final round of 18 holes on Tuesday, Oct. 26.
"It was nice to get back on track this week," said Lubahn. "We expect better than this, but we're happy with the results. Next week will be an important one for us to finish the fall strong."
