As the University prepares to welcome back alumni this weekend with several Homecoming festivities, Miami Athletics also will be honoring alumni this weekend with two very special recognitions.
Four All-Americans, an NCAA record holder and former Major League Baseball player, and a former National Football League player comprise the Miami University Athletic Hall of Fame class for 2010-11. To be inducted during halftime of the Saturday, Oct. 23 football game versus Ohio University are Danielle Berkemeier '03 (women's soccer), Andrea Cunningham '03 (women's soccer), Walt Podgurski '69 (wrestling), Buddy Schultz '73 (baseball), Rebecca Williams '97 (women's track & field) and Mack Yoho '58 (football). (RELEASE) Tickets are still available for the Miami University Hall of Fame brunch on Saturday, Oct. 23. The brunch will be held at the Shriver Center Heritage Room at 9:30 a.m. NO walk-up tickets will be available for the Hall of Fame brunch, and reservations will be taken until 5 p.m. Oct. 18. Cost of the brunch is $18 per person and reservations can be made by contacting the Miami Athletics Ticket Office at 1-866-MUHAWKS or 513-529-HAWK.
The Miami University's Cradle of Coaches Plaza project begins to come to fruition on Saturday, Oct. 23 when the first three of eight unique statues celebrating the storied history of Miami football will be unveiled at noon in a public ceremony at Yager Stadium. Carm Cozza and Paul Dietzel, two of the eight gridiron legends who will eventually be immortalized in the outdoor shrine at the south end of Yager, will return to Miami's campus for a special Friday night function and Saturday's unveiling, while deceased Pro Football Hall of Famer Weeb Ewbank will be represented by his family. A 71-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Zac Dysert to sophomore wide receiver Andy Cruse with 19 seconds remaining in the game lifted the football team (4-3; 3-0 MAC) to a thrilling 27-20 win over Central Michigan last Saturday afternoon. It was the RedHawks' first road win since 2008, snapping an 11-game road skid. Dysert also surpassed the 4,000 yard mark for his career with his 399 yards of passing against the Chippewas. In its final tune-up before the Mid-American Conference Championship in two weeks, the men's cross country team used a strong finish to claim third place at the Falcon Invitational, hosted by Bowling Green last Saturday. The RedHawks had three runners finish in the top 10 led by redshirt sophomore David Eichenberger, who crossed in fifth in a personal-best 24:59, his second time pacing Miami this season. (RECAP) Miami now turns its attention to the MAC Championship, hosted by Western Michigan, in Kalamazoo, Mich., on Oct. 30.
Facing a field that featured the defending NCAA champion and a trio of Division I nationally ranked teams, the women's cross country team finished fourth last Saturday morning at the 6K Penn State National Meet. Senior Rachel Patterson paced the RedHawks for the fourth time this season as she finished 12th in 21:07. (RECAP) Miami, who won its first two MAC titles in program history each of the last two years, goes for a three-peat at the MAC Championship Saturday, Oct. 30 in Kalamazoo, Mich., with the race hosted by the WMU Broncos.
Despite falling behind early, the fourth-ranked hockey team (2-1-1, 0-0-0 CCHA) took advantage of its power play opportunities and scored six unanswered goals to defeat No. 10/11 St. Cloud State, 6-3, Friday night at the National Hockey Center. Senior Carter Camper scored two goals and had an assist while junior Cameron Schilling handed out a career-high-tying three helpers. (RECAP) A physical, hard-fought game came down to the wire, but when the final horn sounded Miami and St. Cloud State were even on the scoreboard as the two sides played to a 1-1 overtime draw Saturday night. (RECAP) Miami returns home next weekend as the RedHawks begin CCHA play by hosting Northern Michigan Friday and Saturday, Oct. 22-23 with both games set for 7:35 p.m. at Steve Cady Arena.
Carter Camper was one of 20 Division I senior hockey student-athletes selected as a candidate for the prestigious Lowe's Senior CLASS Award, Premier Sports Management announced last Wednesday. The award is given annually to one senior student-athlete in several NCAA-sponsored sports and recognizes someone who has had notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition. (RELEASE) After registering a career high in points in each of the first two games of the 2010-11 season, Miami University junior forward Alden Hirschfeld was named CCHA Offensive Player of the Week, the Central Collegiate Hockey Association announced last Monday. The field hockey team pulled into a tie for first place in the Mid-American Conference Sunday with a resounding 4-0 win over Ohio. Miami (9-5; 5-2 MAC) did not take long to get on the board as Mary Hull found Emily Gruesser in the box in the second minute to put the RedHawks up 1-0 against the Bobcats. (RECAP) On Saturday, the RedHawks made a spirited attempt to come back from a 3-0 deficit, but fell just short in a 3-2 defeat to Kent State. (RECAP) The RedHawks travel to Springfield, Mo., for a 1 p.m. game against Missouri State on Sunday, Oct. 24.
Miami soccer (11-5-1; 4-2-1 MAC) played a pair of overtime games last weekend. For the second-straight year, the RedHawks defeated rival Ohio in overtime as sophomore Jess Kodiak lifted the RedHawks to a 1-0 win Friday evening with a game-ending goal just 4:33 into the extra period. Freshman goalkeeper Kris Gasparovic picked up her fifth win and fourth shutout of the year. (RECAP) Miami went to overtime for the third straight game Sunday afternoon at Miami Soccer Field, but came up short, falling to Akron, 2-1, in the 92nd minute. (RECAP) The RedHawks hit the road to face Northern Illinois on Friday at 3 p.m. and Western Michigan Sunday at 1 p.m.
The volleyball team (7-14; 2-6 MAC) suffered a hard-fought four-set loss at Eastern Michigan last Friday. Colleen Loftus recorded her third consecutive double-double with 11 kills and 18 digs in the match. (RECAP) A strong offensive hitting percentage of .330 from Central Michigan proved to be enough to overcome the RedHawks in a 3-0 decision last Saturday. (RECAP) Miami host two matches this weekend during the homecoming festivities. The RedHawks take on Ball State on Friday, Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. A match with Toledo will follow on Saturday, Oct. 23 at 5 p.m.
Miami's fall tennis schedule came to a close on Saturday afternoon in the Round of 16 at the ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championship. Junior Stephanie Danesis, the lone remaining RedHawk in the competition, fell 6-2, 6-3 to No. 2 seed Chelsea Preeg. The loss ended a run that saw three Miami players advance to the second round, the most in program history. Senior Anastasia Dracheva and freshman Katie Thome also won opening matches before being eliminated. Thome won a pair of qualifying matches just to make the main draw. (RECAP)
Men's basketball held its first practice on Friday evening. (RELEASE) Head Men's Basketball Coach Charlie Coles announced the game times for the RedHawks' 2010-11 home games. Miami opens its 16-game home slate against Towson at 6 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 12. Before the season tips off, fans can spend an evening with the 21-time Mid-American Conference Champion Miami men's basketball team at the BBQ & Basketball Tip-Off To The Season on Tuesday, Oct. 26. The event starts at 6:30 p.m. in Millett Hall and will give fans a sneak peak at the 2010-11 RedHawk men's basketball team. It's a Sweet 16 Night as Miami prepares to embark on its 16-game home slate with special guest Wally Szczerbiak from the 1999 Sweet 16 team. Cost is $15 per person and includes dinner and exclusive Miami Basketball giveaways throughout the evening. The golf team returns to the links at the Georgetown Intercollegiate Oct. 18-19. Men's and women's swimming and diving also are in action this week. The women's team travels to Purdue for a 5 p.m. meet on Friday. Both teams host Xavier on Saturday with the men's meet starting at 1 p.m. and the women's slated to start at 2 p.m. The senior synchronized skating team also will be performing this weekend during an intermission of Saturday's hockey game.
