Just as Miami's students return to classes today for the start of second semester, three more RedHawk teams return to their athletic classrooms after the break this coming weekend, while two others returned to the ice this past weekend after month-long layoffs. The grades from fall semester were announced last week and Miami's student-athletes were successful again, compiling a 3.04 grade-point average. Twelve student-athletes recorded perfect 4.0 GPAs. Women's basketball (3-12, 1-1 MAC) opened Mid-American Conference play with a victory Wednesday, Jan. 6, as freshman guard Courtney Osborn scored a career-high 30 points to lead Miami to a 62-55 win at Buffalo. (RECAP) The RedHawks then suffered a hard-fought setback in their MAC home opener, falling to Kent State, 50-39, Saturday, Jan. 9, despite forcing the Flashes into 29 turnovers. (RECAP) The women return to action with a pair of home league contests this week, hosting rival Ohio, Wednesday at 7 p.m., before welcoming Akron to Millett Hall Saturday at 4 p.m.

Top-ranked ice hockey (13-4-5, 10-1-3-1 CCHA) suffered its first weekend sweep of the season, dropping a pair of non-conference games to Robert Morris University over the weekend. On Friday night, Jan. 8, Miami fell to the Colonials, 3-1, at Mellon Arena in Pittsburgh, in its first game in four weeks, as RMU scored two third-period goals to break a 1-1 tie. (RECAP) On Sunday afternoon, the RedHawks were again upset by Robert Morris, this time at Steve Cady Arena in Oxford, as Miami dropped a 2-1 decision, despite a power-play goal from junior forward Pat Cannone and outshooting the Colonials, 39-15. (RECAP) The RedHawks next travel north to Big Rapids, Mich. for a first-place showdown with Ferris State, as the RedHawks and Bulldogs are tied atop the CCHA standings. The puck drops Friday night at 7:05 p.m. and Saturday night at 5:05 p.m. Ferris State won a pair of overtime shootouts in Oxford earlier this year.
Men's basketball (3-11, 0-1 MAC) returned to action after a 12-day layoff Tuesday, Jan. 5, and nearly knocked off Big 12 foe Colorado in Boulder, as Miami's game-winning three-point attempt at the buzzer hit the front of the rim and the Buffaloes escaped, 67-65. (RECAP) Senior guard Kenny Hayes scored a game-high 21 points while freshman guard Allen Roberts tossed in a career-best 14 points in the loss. The RedHawks then opened Mid-American Conference action Saturday, Jan. 9, at Buffalo, as senior center Adam Fletcher tallied a career-high 21 points, but it wasn't enough as the Bulls knocked off Miami, 73-55. (RECAP) After rounding out a four-game road stint, the 'Hawks return home for a pair of league contests this week, hosting Kent State on Tuesday at 7 p.m. before rival Ohio comes calling at noon on Saturday. Radio broadcasts of both games begin a half hour before tip-off on the Miami ISP Sports Network affiliate stations while both games will also be on TV, as Tuesday's contest with the Flashes will be on ONN and Saturday's "Battle of the Bricks" will be on ESPNU. Miami's junior synchronized skating team finished fifth at the Colonial Classic/Junior World Qualifier in Lowell, Mass. over the weekend. With a clean skate, the RedHawks posted a free skate score of 96.13, which was a more than 20-point improvement from their score at the Dr. Porter Classic in the team's first competition of the season. (RECAP) Miami's senior and collegiate teams return to the ice at the Mid-America Championships in Fraser, Mich., Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 16-17.
After over a month off, women's track and field gets into the thick of its indoor schedule, as the RedHawks travel to the BGSU Women's Challenge, hosted by Bowling Green, Saturday, Jan. 16.
Men's and women's swimming return to the pool Friday, Jan. 15, after over a month away from competition, as the women host Cincinnati in a dual meet at 5 p.m. at the Nixon Aquatic Center while the men host the Bearcats in a dual meet beginning at 6 p.m. at the Nixon Aquatic Center.
Six RedHawks were recognized for their academic and athletic success last week, as junior Rachel Byron, sophomore Courtney Clarke, senior Stephanie Laser and junior Brooke Livingston were named to the 2009 women's soccer Academic All-MAC Team (RELEASE), while senior Megan Griffin and junior Michele Metzler earned spots on the 2009 volleyball Academic All-MAC Team.
