Happy Labor Day!
Six teams competed last weekend with three competing in their season openers.
Women's cross country wins the Dayton 5K Invitational |
Placing five runners in the top nine, the Miami women's cross country team earned its third straight Dayton Flyer 5K Invitational title Saturday morning. (RECAP) Sophomore Margaret Bingham led Miami with a third-place finish. The RedHawks return to action Sept. 18 at the MSU Spartan Invitational.

Women's soccer also picked up a 2-1 win at Eastern Illinois on Sunday to move the RedHawks to 2-1 on the season. Senior Allison Berkey and junior Sara Lund each scored a goal and registered an assist in the winning effort. (RECAP) After playing at Morehead State this Friday at 7 p.m., Miami returns home to host Xavier at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

On Saturday, a crowd of 41,037 gathered at Paul Brown Stadium for the RUMBLE at the RIVER between Miami and Kentucky. Although the RedHawks had a solid first-quarter effort, outgaining Kentucky in total yardage, 98-64, the Wildcats went on to capture the 42-0 season-opening win. (RECAP) Miami travels to Boise State for an 8 p.m. (ET) game on Saturday. The Broncos were ranked No. 14 in the preseason AP Poll and No. 16 in the preseason USA Today Coaches' Poll. The radio broadcast of the game begins at 7 p.m. on the Miami ISP Sports Network affiliate stations.

The Miami men's cross country team also opened its 2009 season, placing second at the Dayton Flyer 5K Invitational Saturday morning. Redshirt senior Kevin Silver paced the RedHawks, crossing the finish line in fourth place in a time of 15:12. The RedHawks return to action Sept. 19 at the Iona Meet of Champions. (RECAP)

It is a big weekend for Miami volleyball and field hockey as the volleyball team hosts a tournament and field hockey entertains Central Michigan and Northwestern.
The RedHawk volleyball team hosts Troy, Pacific and St. John's this weekend in the Miami Best Western Classic. Miami faces St. Johns at 7 p.m. Friday and takes on Troy at 9:30 a.m. and Pacific at 7 p.m. on Saturday. Additional matches for the tournament are Troy vs. Pacific at 5 p.m. Friday, and Pacific vs. St. John's at 11:30 a.m. and St. John's vs. Troy at 3 p.m. on Saturday. The RedHawks are coming off three four-set losses at the IUPUI Hampton Inn Invitational last weekend to Northwestern (RECAP), Western Kentucky (RECAP) and IUPUI (RECAP).
Miami's field hockey team, which lost at Louisville Saturday, 4-0 (RECAP), hosts Central Michigan in its Mid-American Conference opener at 3 p.m. Friday, before entertaining Northwestern at 1 p.m. Sunday. CMU and Northwestern will play a neutral-site game at Miami at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
Opening up its season this weekend is the Miami golf team. The RedHawks will compete in the Gopher Invitational in Minneapolis, Minn., Sept. 13-14.
Synchronized skating held tryouts last week and has selected its 2009-10 squads.

Last week the entire Miami Athletics Family gathered for the Culture of Champions Kickoff Program and Cookout. The women's teams were recognized for winning their second straight Jacoby Cup. Ice hockey's Gary Steffes and volleyball's Maria Leahy addressed their peers on what is driving them to achieve more in 2009-10, and the football seniors led everybody in the Miami Fight Song to cap the program before heading to the picnic.

Last Thursday was the first HawkTawk presented by Brick Street. HawkTawk is the weekly coaches' show that takes place at 7 p.m. Thursdays throughout the year and is hosted by the Voice of the RedHawks Steve Baker and Tim Bray. Head Football Coach Michael Haywood and Head Volleyball Coach Carolyn Condit will be this week's guests.
