Miami Falls to Northwestern in Opening of IUPUI Tournament

INDIANAPOLIS - The Northwestern Widcats defeated Miami 3-1 Saturday in the opening game of the IUPUI Hampton Inn Invitational. The RedHawks fall to 1-3 on the season, while Northwestern improves to 2-2.
Miami jumped to a 9-3 lead to begin the first set off kills from Cassie Farrell and Andrea Atteberry, as well as a service ace from Megan Griffin. After splitting the next two points, the RedHawks went on a 7-2 run to increase the advantage to 17-6. An 11-6 run by the Wildcats closed the deficit to 17-23, but Michele Metzler scored the final two kills to give Miami a 25-18 win.
In a reverse of the first set, Northwestern opened a 9-4 lead to start set two. Two kills by Maria Leahy helped start a 12-7 run from the RedHawks to tie the set at 16. The teams traded points until a kill from Hallie Hanks gave Miami a 23-22 lead. However, the Wildcats took the next three points to win the set 25-23.
Northwestern held a small lead throughout the majority of set three. With the score 19-13 in favor of the Wildcats, the RedHawks attempted to rally with a kill from Griffin and two consecutive service aces from Leahy that brought them within three at 16-19. Northwestern then went on a 6-3 run to close out a 25-19 set three victory.
The Wildcats went in front in the fourth set 16-9. While Leahy and Hanks each recorded multiple kills to help the Miami cause, it was not enough as Northwestern won set four, 25-19, and the match 3-1.
For the match Leahy led the RedHawks with a double-double of 14 kills and 16 digs. She had a .314 hitting percentage. Atteberry also had a double-double with 34 assists and 10 digs. Lisa Treadway recorded 13 digs for Miami.
The RedHawks return to action later Saturday when they take on Western Kentucky at the IUPUI Hampton Inn Invitational.
