OXFORD, Ohio - Fifty-five percent of Miami University's 507 student-athletes achieved at least a "B" grade-point average during the 2009 spring semester and more than one-fifth of them earned Dean's List honors, it was announced today by MU's athletic department.
According to statistics from the athletic department's Academic Support Program, directed by Cindy Veraldo, RedHawk student-athletes compiled an average GPA of 3.05 during the spring semester and a 3.01 cumulative GPA over the entire 2008-09 academic year.
A total of 106 of the 507 student-athletes (21 percent) registered a GPA of 3.50-3.99 to earn Dean's List honors while 16 others composed a perfect 4.00 GPA to win a place on the President's List. Altogether, 279 student athletes received a 3.00 GPA or higher during the spring.
The women's and men's cross country squads topped the 2008-09 team category with respective GPAs of 3.49 and 3.27.
The spring academic numbers exceeded an impressive array of statistics from the 2008 fall semester that saw 248 (46 percent) earn a 3.0 or higher, 92 win Dean's List honors (17 percent) and 16 collect President's List kudos (three percent). The women's volleyball and men's cross country teams earned the top GPA figures during the fall with respective marks of 3.40 and 3.20.
"This is the highest semester GPA for the entire department that I have seen in my seven years working with the student-athletes," said Veraldo. "The coaches expect strong academic achievement from the athletes on their teams and most of the students use the academic support resources of the Gross Center and the Rinella Learning Center on campus."
