INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Alexis Lape finished second in the triple jump, posting a new personal best and a regional qualifying mark, to highlight Miami's participation at the Stan Lyons Invitational late Saturday night.
Lape jumped 12.61 meters (41-feet, 4.50-inches) to finish just ahead of teammates Hope Alexander (third at 12.18m/39-feet, 11.50-inches) and Magda Wikar (fifth at 11.12m/36-feet, 5.75-inches). Lape had previously qualified for the NCAA Mideast Regional in the 400 Hurdles.
Alexander also made the finals in the Hammer Throw, but had to pass her attempts in order to compete in the triple jump.
Samantha Gable placed sixth in the shot put with a personal best of 13.72m (45-00.25). The effort was good enough to earn her a spot in the US Junior Championships later this summer.
Margarita Pogorelov won the 100 meter dash at 11.86, then teamed with Lindsay Forconi, Alexia DeWitz and DeLana Turner to finish third in the 4x100 relay with a time of 48.31. Miami's A and B teams finished second and third, respectively, in the 4x400 relay.
"I think our athletes did a wonderful job," Assistant Coach Mark Rodriguez said. "We fed off the reports of our team at the Drake Relays and we sent back our highlights that seemed to encourage them as well. One of our goals was to qualify more people for the Jesse Owens meet next weekend and we did just that."
The distance runners finished their competition schedule at the Drake Relays, finishing ninth in a time of 20:09.06. Amanda Mirochna started the race, followed by Olivia Klaus and Kelsey McHugh. Kelley Miller ran the anchor leg, helping Miami to a higher place than Texas and Alabama.
"We got two good carries from Kelsey and Olivia. Kelley found herself alone as our anchor and didn't have much of a chance to compete. But, all in all, it was still a good experience and a productive weekend. The girls got some great races in and gained valuable experience and perspective."
Miami returns to action next weekend at Ohio State's Jesse Owens Invitational.
