All three Miami University synchronized skating teams open the 2009-10 campaign this weekend when the RedHawks compete in the Dr. Richard Porter Classic Dec. 5-6 in Ann Arbor, Mich.
"This first competition-The Dr. Porter Classic-is one of the highlights of the season," said head coach Carla DeGirolamo. "This is our first time out and most of the top teams in the country come in and debut their programs at this event. It will be a good indicator for us and allow us to get things rolling and set our statement at the beginning of the season and how we want to keep progressing through the year."
Miami's junior team gets things rolling with its short program competition, early Saturday evening. The RedHawk junior team skates it short program to "Your Song" from the Moulin Rouge soundtrack. Following the junior short program event, Miami's senior team opens its season with its short program choreographed to music from Romeo and Juliette.
On Sunday, all three teams showcase their free skate programs. The RedHawk collegiate team's free skate program is to a "Sex and the City" theme. Miami's junior team performs its free skate program to a compilation of different versions of "Bohemian Rhapsody", while the senior team's free skate program is choreographed to the music from the 1940s including "Heat Wave" by Irving Berlin, "Summertime" by George Gershwin and "Too Darn Hot" by Cole Porter.
