Miami Drops Decision to CSUB

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - A 16-0 run late in the first half proved to be the difference as Cal State Bakersfield defeated Miami 76-56 on Tuesday afternoon. Courtney Osborn led the RedHawks with 20 points, her seventh 20-point effort of the season. Miami falls to 1-10 on the year, while the Roadrunners improve to 6-7.
After falling behind 5-2 early, a Courtney Reed layup sparked a 12-5 run that saw Miami take a 15-10 lead. The highlight came with the score tied at 10, as Osborn hit a three pointer to take the lead and hit two free throws on the next possession to give Miami its biggest advantage of the period.
With nine minutes remaining in the first half, Ashleigh Brown hit a jumper to put the RedHawks in front, 17-12. Miami's shot went cold from there, as Bakersfield went on that 16-0 run over the next 4:22 to take a 28-17 lead with 4:38 left. A Reed layup off a Kirsten Olowinski pass broke up the Roadrunner run. Two Osborn free throws closed the deficit to seven at 28-21 with 3:54 remaining, but CSUB closed on a 7-2 run to take a 35-23 lead into the break.
Miami shot only 24.1 percent (7-for-29) in the first half, compared to Bakersfield at 43.8 percent (14-for-32). Osborn led the RedHawks with nine points.
The Roadrunners scored the first five points of the second half to take a 40-23 lead. Osborn hit a layup with 17:03 remaining for Miami's first bucket of the period. CSUB continued to put on the pressure with a 12-4 run to take a 52-29 advantage with 12:52 to go in the game.
A jumper by Osborn, as well as four points from Lillian Pitts led the RedHawks on an 18-10 run to close to within 62-47 with 5:26 remaining. From there Brown hit a couple of nice layups, but the Roadrunners hit their free throws to close out the 76-56 victory.
In addition to Osborn's 20 points, Brown contributed 12, while Hencke put in eight. Miami shot 34.4 percent (21-for-61) for the game, compared to Bakersfield at 48.3 percent (28-for-58). The RedHawks outrebounded the Roadrunners 41-39, with Olowinski and Pitts leading the team with six each. Katie Williams led Bakersfield with 22 points.
Miami returns to action on Wednesday, Dec. 30 when it welcomes Eastern Illinois to Millett Hall for a 7 p.m. game.
