This past week Miami student-athletes turned their focus towards the books, as the first semester at Miami came to a close with final exams. Just two RedHawk squads were in action last week, as men's basketball traveled north on Saturday and women's basketball flew west Sunday. The two hoops teams are also the only Miami squads in action next week, playing early in the week before joining the rest of the RedHawk student-athletes on winter break.
Men's basketball (3-8) staged a furious second-half rally Saturday night at U.S. Cellular Arena, but ran out of time as the Milwaukee Panthers knocked off the RedHawks, 68-61. (RECAP) Freshman guard Orlando Williams scored a career-high 17 points, all in the second half, to help Miami cut a 19-point deficit to four with just under a minute to go before Milwaukee held on by making five free throws. The RedHawks continue their four-game road trip Wednesday, Dec. 23, at 7 p.m. ET as Miami takes on local rival Xavier at the Cintas Center. The game will be televised locally on Fox Sports Ohio.
Women's basketball (1-9) returned for its first game after final exams by beginning a two-game California road trip Sunday, but Miami suffered a poor shooting night and fell to Cal State Northridge, 68-50. (RECAP) Freshman guard Courtney Osborn led Miami with 15 points. The RedHawks conclude their two-game West Coast trip Tuesday, Dec. 22, at Cal State Bakersfield with tip-off set for 4 p.m. ET (1 p.m. local).
Ice hockey (13-2-5, 10-1-3-1 CCHA) set a school record by earning a No. 1 ranking for the 11th straight week last Monday. (RELEASE) Miami is the top-ranked team in all three major polls for the first time since Nov. 30, as the RedHawks returned to the top of the INCH Power Ratings while keeping their stronghold on the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine and USCHO.com/CBS College Sports polls. The next polls will be released on Jan. 4, after the conclusion of holiday tournament play while Miami returns to the ice Jan. 8-10 for a home-and-home series against Robert Morris.
Thanks to all those fans who voted this past week to help Miami Athletics and MURedHawks.com select the top moments of the decade. The votes have been counted and the results are in-be sure to check back on Tuesday to see which event you voted as the No. 10 moment of Miami Athletics in the past 10 years. The moments will be counted down each day with the No. 1 moment being revealed Thursday, Dec. 31. (RELEASE)
HawkTawk presented by Brick Street will be off this week for the holiday break.
Happy Holidays and GO REDHAWKS!
