With Miami students and student-athletes alike preparing for and taking final exams this week, RedHawk athletics has a relatively quiet week, as men's and women's basketball are the only teams in action, playing on the road over the weekend. Last week as classes wound down, three Miami squads heated up the action on the ice and on the hardwood.
Miami celebrates a goal vs. Ohio State during Saturday's comeback win. |
Ice hockey (13-2-5, 10-1-3-1 CCHA) continued its dominance nationally and in the conference, as the RedHawks were ranked No. 1 in the two major polls (USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine and USCHO.com/CBS College Sports) for the ninth straight week after its sweep of Notre Dame. (RELEASE) Miami earned another sweep this past weekend, taking down Ohio State in a home-and-home series. On Friday, the 'Hawks blanked the Buckeyes 6-0 in Columbus as junior Tommy Wingels scored four times and sophomore goalie Cody Reichard earned his second straight shutout. (RECAP) Saturday, Miami erased a two-goal deficit in the third period for a come-from-behind 4-2 win over Ohio State, as junior Andy Miele scored both the game-tying and game-winning goals. (RECAP) The top-ranked RedHawks are now off until 2010, when they'll face the Robert Morris Colonials Friday, Jan. 8 in Pittsburgh and Sunday, Jan. 10 at Steve Cady Arena at the Goggin Ice Center in a pair of non-league contests.
Kenny Hayes drives for the game-winning layup vs. Wright State Sunday. |
Men's Basketball (3-7) completed a rugged six-day, three-game stretch this week, but picked up a thrilling 56-55 victory at home over rival Wright State Sunday to cap the stretch as senior guard Kenny Hayes knocked down a driving layup with 22 seconds remaining to give Miami its first lead since midway through the first half and the 'Hawks denied WSU's shot at the buzzer to hold on for the win. (RECAP) Senior center Adam Fletcher logged his first-career double-double with 10 points and a career-best 13 rebounds in the victory. On Tuesday, the RedHawks fell to a tough Temple team in Millett Hall, 64-42, as a 25-0 Owl run in the first half broke open a close game early. (RECAP) Thursday, Miami battled No. 19 Cincinnati down to the wire at U.S. Bank Arena in front of a national audience on ESPN2, but came away just short of the upset, as the 'Hawks fell to the Bearcats, 63-59, despite a game-high 19 points from Hayes. (RECAP) Men's basketball returns to the court, Saturday, Dec. 19, at Milwaukee with tip-off set for 8 p.m. ET. The radio broadcast of the game will begin at 7:30 p.m. ET on the Miami ISP Sports Network affiliate stations.

(RECAP) On Saturday, the RedHawks faced 20th-ranked Dayton at Millett Hall and again battled their local rival tough, but fell 84-75, even with freshman forward Kirsten Olowinski recording her first-career double-double.
