Continuing a successful fall for many of the athletic teams, two RedHawk squads played for Mid-American Conference Tournament titles last weekend.
Field Hockey (13-10-0) routed Missouri State, 9-1, in the MAC Tournament quarterfinals, tying a school record for goals scored in a game. (RECAP) In the semifinals, the No. 3 seeded RedHawks topped No. 2 seed Kent State, 2-1, in a thrilling overtime win. Kent State broke through with a goal at 40:27. The RedHawks returned to the offensive immediately, responding at 44:48 when Rachael Walz scored. Only 3:19 into the overtime period Amanda Seeley scored the game-winner for Miami off a deflection by KSU goalie Caroline Suitch, advancing Miami to the championship game for the second time in three years. (RECAP) Miami came up short in a 2-1 loss to Ohio in the championship game. Katie Brightwell, Mary Hull and Seeley were named to the All-Tournament Team. (RECAP) Named to the All-MAC First Team were Hull, Maggie Marcum and Katie Brightwell. Christine Brightwell and Kate Snyder were named to the second team. (RELEASE)
Women's soccer (12-8-1) scored goals in the 65th and 71st minute to produce a 2-1 come-from-behind win against No. 2 seeded Eastern Michigan in the semifinals. Allison Berkey scored the game-tying goal, while Sara Lund put in the game-winner. (RECAP) Miami, the No. 6 seed, advanced to battle No. 1 seed Central Michigan in the title game. The Chippewas scored in the 14th minute, which proved to be enough as they went on to the 1-0 triumph. (RECAP) Jodi Zwingelberg, Alexandra Karlsson and Lund were named to the All-MAC Tournament Team for Miami. Additionally, Zwingelberg and Brooke Livingston garnered First-Team All-MAC accolades, while Berkey and Krista Pace were selected to the Second Team. Freshman Jess Kodiak received All-MAC Freshman Team plaudits. (RELEASE) Earlier in the week, Courtney Clarke was named to the 2009 women's soccer ESPN the Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District IV Third Team by the College Sports Information Directors of America, (RELEASE) while Pace and Stephanie Laser swept MAC Player of the Week honors. SOCCER VS. CENTRAL MICHIGAN (MAC FINALS) PHOTO GALLERY
Ice hockey (8-1-1; 5-1-0-0 CCHA) picked up a historic sweep at Michigan over the weekend, marking the first time since Oct. 26-27, 2001-a span of 45 series-that the Wolverines have been swept on their home ice. On Friday, Jarod Palmer scored twice in the first period and goaltender Cody Reichard stopped 27 shots to lead No. 1 Miami to a 3-1 victory against No. 4 Michigan. (RECAP) Miami scored five unanswered goals after falling behind 1-0 as the RedHawks earned the sweep with a 5-1 win on Saturday. (RECAP) Miami hosts Ferris State this weekend at 7:35 p.m. Friday and 7:05 p.m. Saturday. Both games will be televised on ONN.
The football team (1-9; 1-5 MAC) rallied from an 18-point, fourth-quarter deficit to take the lead with 2:36 remaining, but the Temple Owls booted an 18-yard field goal with three seconds left on the clock to steal a 34-32 victory last Thursday night at Lincoln Financial Field. Redshirt freshman quarterback Zac Dysert threw for a career-best 426 yards and three touchdowns on 31-of-51 passing for the RedHawks, marking the second-highest total for passing yards in the MAC this year and the fourth most in Miami history (all behind Ben Roethlisberger). (RECAP) Miami returns home for its final two games, hosting Bowling Green this Thursday and Buffalo next Wednesday. Volleyball (16-10; 11-3 MAC) captured a pair of MAC wins last week. On Thursday, the RedHawks downed Bowling Green in four sets (17-25, 25-18, 25-21, 25-19). Megan Griffin tallied 14 kills and a sizzling .824 hitting percentage for the match with no attack errors. Andrea Atteberry led the team against the Falcons with 50 assists. (RECAP) On Saturday, Miami knocked off MAC West Division leader Western Michigan in a dramatic five-set win (22-25, 25-20, 22-25, 29-27, 15-11). Maria Leahy had a double-double with 11 kills and 15 digs, while Atteberry also had a double-double with 58 assists and 10 digs. (RECAP) Last week, Atteberry garnered MAC East Division Co-Offensive Player of the Week honors. (RELEASE) Miami rounds out regular-season MAC play this week, hosting MAC East Division leader Ohio at 7 p.m. Friday and Kent State at 5 p.m. Saturday.
Women's swimming and diving (4-3; 3-1 MAC) competed in a pair of MAC meets over the weekend. After a 174-124 loss at Toledo on Friday (RECAP), Miami bounced back with a 165-129 win at Bowling Green on Saturday. Kelsey Vehr and freshman Leah Thornton both won two races apiece against the Falcons. (RECAP) Miami returns home this week to host Kenyon at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
Another strong second-half effort lifted the men's basketball team to a 70-48 exhibition win against Saginaw Valley State on Sunday. Kenny Hayes led the RedHawks with 16 points. MEN'S BASKETBALL VERSUS SAGINAW VALLEY PHOTO GALLERY
Five RedHawks scored in double figures led by freshman forward Kirsten Olowinski, who had a double-double with a game-high 20 points and 13 rebounds, as the women's basketball team downed Tiffin 85-54 in its lone exhibition game. The men's golf team concluded the fall portion of its schedule with a fifth-place finish last Monday at the Renaissance Invitational hosted by Xavier University. Leading the way for Miami was senior Craig Voorhees, who finished in eighth place. (RECAP) Miami is off until February when the RedHawks resume play at the Rice Intercollegiate.
Miami men's and women's cross country teams run at the Great Lakes Regional Championship on Saturday, Nov. 14 in Bloomington, Ind. Races begin at 11 a.m. The men's swimming and diving team also returns to action this week, hosting Ohio State at 5 p.m. Friday and Kenyon at 1 p.m. Saturday.
On a sad note, Miami Athletics sends its condolences to the family of former Miami basketball great Phil Lumpkin, who passed away last week. Lumpkin, inducted into the Miami Hall of Fame in 1983, scored 1,243 points for the Red and White from 1971-74 and was a three-time All-MAC selection, earning first-team honors twice. He was drafted by the NBA's Portland Trailblazers in 1974 and has been coaching at O'Dea High School in Seattle where he won five state titles. Lumpkin was 57.
