As we head into the final month of 2009, Miami Athletics hosts several home events this week, while two winter sports get their seasons underway on the road.
After spending its first five games away from Millett Hall, the men's basketball team (2-4) put together a convincing win in its home opener against Evansville last Saturday, 82-58. Sophomore forward/center Julian Mavunga recorded his third double-double in four games with a career-high 18 points to lead all scorers and a game-high 10 rebounds. MEN'S BASKETBALL VERSUS EVANSVILLE PHOTO GALLERYThe hockey team (9-2-5) also returns home this week, hosting Notre Dame Dec. 4-5. Friday's game time is set for 7:35 p.m., while Saturday's start is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Miami welcomes back its hockey alumni for their Bicentennial Reunion Weekend. They will honored during Saturday's game. Last weekend, the No. 1 RedHawks suffered a 3-2 loss to No. 6 Bemidji State Friday on the first day of the Subway Holiday Classic. (RECAP) Freshman forward Reilly Smith scored two goals-including one that tied the game with 2:41 remaining in regulation-and tallied two assists to spur Miami to a 5-5 tie at No. 4 North Dakota in the final day of the tournament. Congratulations to senior outside hitter Megan Griffin, who recorded her 1,000th career kill in Miami's final volleyball match of the season last Saturday at Cincinnati. Griffin, who needed five kills going into the match and finished with seven on the day, became the 18th member of the RedHawks' 1,000 kill club. Senior setter Andrea Atteberry tallied 27 assists in the match and finishes her career with 4,621 career assists to rank second all-time at Miami. The RedHawks dropped a three-set decision to the Bearcats and concluded the season with a 17-14 mark. (RECAP)
Women's basketball (1-4) lost two hard-fought games at the Pitt Thanksgiving Tournament last weekend. The RedHawks battled back to trim a 24-point second-half deficit against Marshall to four points late in the game on Friday, but the Thundering Herd held on for an 83-76 win. (RECAP) On Saturday, the RedHawks were edged in overtime by Appalachian State, 79-76. (RECAP) Freshman guard Courtney Osborn paced the RedHawks each night scoring 20 points against Marshall and pouring in a career-best 25 points against the Mountaineers. Osborn has scored 20 or more points in three of Miami's five games this season. The RedHawks play at Kentucky on Dec. 1 and at Butler on Dec. 5.
Returning to action this week also is men's and women's swimming and diving as the RedHawks host the three-day Miami Invitational. The invitational begins on Thursday, Dec. 3 and runs through Saturday, Dec. 5 with sessions each day beginning at 9 a.m. and 6 p.m.
Women's indoor track and field competes in its first meet of the season at the Findlay Oiler Open Dec. 4-5.
All three synchronized skating teams will compete for the first time this season at the Dr. Richard Porter Classic in Ann Arbor, Mich., Dec. 5-6.
