Although most Miami students are getting ready for their Thanksgiving break, RedHawk student-athletes continued to work hard both athletically and academically this week and will keep doing so right through the Turkey-filled holiday.
Ice hockey remained atop all three polls for the sixth straight week this past week. (RELEASE) The top-ranked RedHawks (9-1-4, 9-1-3-1 CCHA) picked up five points in CCHA action over the weekend, skating past Western Michigan Friday night, 3-0, behind a pair of shorthanded goals and two goals from junior Andy Miele (RECAP) before playing the Broncos to a 1-1 tie Saturday evening. (RECAP) Miami won the shootout 2-1 however, its first shootout win this season, to earn the extra point in the CCHA standings. The RedHawks step out of conference but remain on the road next weekend at the Subway Holiday Classic in Grand Forks, N.D. with a Frozen Four rematch against Bemidji State Friday, Nov. 27 at 5:07 p.m. ET and a showdown with host and second-ranked North Dakota Saturday, Nov. 28 at 8:35 p.m. ET.
Football closed out its 2009 campaign, the inaugural one for head coach Michael Haywood, with a 42-17 loss to Buffalo Wednesday night at Yager Stadium. (RECAP) Senior Brayden Coombs, in his final appearance as a RedHawk, caught a single-game school-record 14 passes for 100 yards. The game was the final appearance in Red and White for 11 Miami seniors. The RedHawks finished the 2009 season 1-11 and 1-7 in the MAC.
