Brightwell Nets Overtime Winner as Miami Downs Missouri State

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - Playing for the first time in a week, a Christine Brightwell goal 3:38 into overtime gave Miami the 2-1 victory over Missouri State Sunday afternoon. It was the RedHawks' fourth overtime victory of the season and improved their record to 10-8 overall and 6-2 in the Mid-American Conference. The Bears fall to 4-13 overall and 1-7 in the MAC.
Missouri State struck first in the first half off a goal from Alyssa Hile at the 17:27 mark. Seven minutes later, Maggie Marcum received a pass in the box from Kate Snyder and buried it from the left corner to tie the score. The game remained tied going into halftime.
The second half featured physical play and five cards, four of which were on Miami. However despite holding the Bears to only one shot during the half, the RedHawks were unable to score and the game went into overtime.
In overtime, Brightwell ended the game early when she stole the ball from the defender inside Missouri State's circle and scored from 11 yards out.
For the game, Miami outshot the Bears 11-6. Marcum led the RedHawks with five shots, while Kelsey Dean made three saves in goal.
Miami controls its own destiny in the MAC race heading into the final weekend. Kent State is the current conference leader at 7-1, while the RedHawks and Ohio are right behind them, each at 6-2. Miami will face the Golden Flashes on Saturday, Oct. 31 at 11 a.m. in Kent, Ohio. It will then close the regular season on Sunday, Nov. 1 at Ohio at 1 p.m.
