TOLEDO, Ohio - An inconsistent hitting attack hurt the Miami volleyball team in a 0-3 defeat at Toledo Friday night. The RedHawks fall to 11-10 overall and 6-3 in the Mid-American Conference. The Rockets are 13-8 overall and 4-5 in the MAC.
Toledo jumped to a 5-2 lead in the opening set. Back-to-back kills from Michele Metzler and Cassie Farrell cut the deficit to one at 4-5. With the score 8-7 in favor of the Rockets, Toledo went on a 7-2 run that proved to be the decisive blow. Miami could not overcome the seven-point deficit and eventually fell, 19-25.
Despite three kills from Farrell, the RedHawks fell behind, 6-10, in set two. A 7-5 run keyed by two Metzler blocks led Miami to within two points at 13-15, but the Rockets responded with a 10-2 run to close out the set, 25-15.
Set three played similar to the first two sets, as Miami kept the score close early. With Toledo up 9-7, a 7-1 run put the Rockets up 16-8. Jenn Caylor had two blocks as part of a run that saw Miami close to within six at 16-22. Toledo scored the next two points to create match point at 24-16, but Christina Menche recorded back-to-back kills to keep the RedHawks in the set. On the next point however, Toledo recorded the kill to win the match, 25-18.
Farrell led Miami with a career-high 11 kills. Maria Leahy was the defensive leader with 13 digs. As a team the RedHawks hit only .143, compared to .298 for Toledo.
Miami will try to get back on the winning track Saturday when it travels to Ball State for a 7 p.m. match.
