MURedHawks.com: Good morning and welcome to another version of RedHawk Chatter. Today we welcome a pair of hockey players: junior forward Carter Camper and sophomore goaltender Cody Reichard. |
MURedHawks.com: We will get started in just a second. |
Mo (Indianapolis): Cody, you're known as a guy who brings it every day - practice or game. What does it mean to you to have this kind of reputation? |
Cody Reichard: It is something I pride myself on. I am not sure I have that reputation, but I try to set a good example for every one. |
Carter Camper: I think he does. I have never had a goaltender that plays as much as Cody does. He is always working and wants to take extra shots. Both our guys work hard there. |
JIM, CINCY: If you have a 7 p.m. game, when do you start yourself preparing for that game? What do you do for preparation. Best of luck this weekend. |
Cody Reichard: We really start preparing for the games on Monday. I have a class Friday morning, then come here and skate. Its pregame meal and then I take a nap. I don't really think about the game. Every guy on the team knows when they wake up it's game day. |
Cody Reichard: Before the game, I do some work with a tennis ball before the team meeting, then I stretch. From there, it's put the gear on and hit the ice. |
Carter Camper: I am pretty much like Cody. I like to stay calm and relaxed. When I get too into something, I lose my emotions and then my focus. |
Ryan (Oxford): Carter, how does it feel to be considered for the second year in a row to be a Hobey Baker candidate? |
Carter Camper: It is nice that people are talking about it, but its still early. I think it shows more about the team. Being No. 1 in the nation, there are going to be a handful of guys considered for those awards. |
Lauren (Oxford): Cody, how has your confidence level in goal changed after playing in the national tournament as a freshman? |
Cody Reichard: The championship game last year was a good experience... not only in hockey but in life. The whole tournament -- the way we came together as a team -- was a good experience. We have brought that experience into this season. |
Sarah (Michigan): This question is for Camper. I was wondering if you and Palmer actually have a "sixth sense" of what the other person is going to do with the puck. Watching the game it looks like you two are on the same wavelength when you are on the same line. |
Carter Camper: I think Jarod has a better sixth sense than I do. He throws some crazy passes.... things I would never try. We both like to play that way, though, setting up our linemates for scoring chances. I think maybe you are born with those kind of skills. We both have the attributes that help us connect. |
Ryan (Oxford): How did it feel to come off the bench in the last game and stop every shot you faced? |
Cody Reichard: Once I got in the game, I calmed down right away. I didn't get a whole lot of work, but once I was in, the guys did a good job of limiting their chances. As a goalie, you always have to be ready. You never know what will happen with the game or with injuries. |
Ryan (Oxford): Carter, how does it feel to be closing in on the 100-point mark for your collegiate career? Does it feel like you are approaching a major career landmark? |
MURedHawks.com: Note that Jarod Palmer is just two points shy of becoming the 43rd player in school history to reach the mark. Carter has 88 and could become the 44th. |
MURedHawks.com: Note that Jarod Palmer is just two points shy of becoming the 43rd player in school history to reach the mark. Carter has 88 and could become the 44th. |
Carter Camper: I don't really think its a milestone. I think that as our program grows and with the offense we have, you will see many more people gain this mark. |
Amelia (Columbus): Congratulations on a great season so far to both of you! Carter, what do you think will be the key to playing Miami's game instead of Michigan State's game this weekend? Cody, I've always wondered...what goes through your mind when the other team is driving down the ice toward you? |
Carter Camper: I think it't the same every weekend. We have to play our game. When we go away from our game plan, things tend to slip away. |
Carter Camper: Stop the puck! I jsut try to read the play and see what the possibilities are, what play can develop. I also try to communicate with the defensemen to tell them which players to back check and which to pick up. |
Jim (Oxford): What is the off ice program like during the season? |
Carter Camper: In season is different from out of season, obviously. The season takes a toll on the body, so we tone it down in the weight room. We still lift a couple times a week, but its less weight and less reps. |
Cody Reichard: As a goalie, we work on more lower body exercises during the season than other areas. |
Tank (Piqua): As MURedHawks.com knows, I'm a huge hockey fan. Besides the national championship game, which Miami game of the past do each of you wish you could play again ... and why? |
Carter Camper: Without a doubt, Boston College my freshman year. There was never a doubt that we would not win it. The way it ended was unexpected. |
jimmy, new york: What does Coach Blasi mean to you and the team |
Carter Camper: It means I am bigger than someone else out there on the ice (laughs). Seriously, the friendship is most significant. Many coaches I have had has been a distant figure. He is always supportive and I think that is a reason for our success. |
Cody Reichard: I agree. Coach is always around and available. All of the coaches help us out and it's not all about hockey. It is what creates the culture here. |
Ryan (Chicago): I enjoy coming up to watch you guys play but I have to ask does it ever get crazy being so well known on campus? I can only imagine what it is like trying to have a personal life. |
Cody Reichard: The hardest thing is to balance everything while still getting good grades. |
Carter Camper: I think a lot of people think that, but we are just like every other student out there. After the Frozen Four, I think people wanted to say something to us, but maybe were afraid to ask. |
MURedHawks.com: Thanks to these guys for spending some time with us. Sorry to Matt, Chris, Will and all the others whose questions we didn't get to. Antoher chat is scheduled for next week and the hockey players will be back in a couple weeks. |
