Evanston, Ill. - Ryan Field
Miami vs. Northwestern
Freshman defensive lineman Austin Brown blocked a Northwestern field goal in the second quarter, marking Miami's first blocked field goal this season and the first of Brown's career.
Freshman wide receiver Lucas Swift caught his first pass as a RedHawk from redshirt freshman quarterback Zac Dysert in the second quarter for a four-yard gain.
Redshirt sophomore free safety Anthony Kokal hauled in his first-career interception in the third quarter, picking off the ball on the Miami 1-yard line to prevent a Northwestern score. There was no return on the interception. It was Miami's fourth pick of the season.
Redshirt freshman cornerback D.J. Brown had a career-high six tackles against Northwestern as did junior linebacker DeAndre Gilmore, who finished with a career-best 12 tackles, which tied for game-high honors with Northwestern's Nate Williams.
Redshirt sophomore linebacker Jerrell Wedge had a career-best seven solo tackles, including a career-high two tackles for loss (one sack) for 13 yards.
Redshirt freshman wide receiver Andy Cruse made his first-career catch late in the third quarter for a 15-yard gain from redshirt freshman quarterback Zac Dysert. He finished with 56 yards on three catches, including his first-career touchdown (a 23-yard reception) in the fourth quarter.
Senior wide receiver Brayden Coombs totaled a career-high 62 receiving yards Saturday on a career-high-tying four catches, after setting a career best with 46 yards a week ago vs. Cincinnati.
Despite the loss, Miami still controls the all-time series with Northwestern, 6-3. The loss snapped a five-game winning streak for Miami in Evanston. The Wildcats beat Miami in Evanston for the first time since 1963. NU has now won two straight against Miami overall, however.
The 16 points allowed by Miami were the fewest this season and the fewest since giving up 16 Sept. 6, 2008 at Michigan (a 16-6 loss, as well). Northwestern was averaging 31.8 points per game entering the contest.
