FARMINGTON, Pa.--Miami University's golf team finished in fourth place among the 12-team field at the Rutherford Intercollegiate. With a score of 891 for the tournament, the RedHawks were edged by two strokes by third-place Penn State, while topping fifth-place Missouri by seven strokes. Purdue won the tournament with a score of 871, followed by VCU at 886.
"I was happy with a lot of things we did," said first-year head coach Casey Lubahn. "I thought our ball striking was exceptional. We put ourselves in a position to shoot better scores than we did. I was disappointed with our short game, but that's something to work on as we move forward."
"I thought we did a good job of turning today's round around," added Lubahn. "It started to slip away from us through the first nine, but we battled through the back nine."
Sophomore Nathan Sutherland paced the RedHawk, tying for eighth place at five-over par 221. After shooting 71-77 in the first two rounds, Sutherland fired a 73 in the final round to improve his final standing.
"I thought Nathan did a good job," remarked Lubahn. "He was battling some issues with his feet yesterday and today. That kind of grit and determination is what we are going to need as we go forward."
After a team-best round of 69 in the opening round, senior Aaron Crist carded two rounds of 77 to finish in a tie for 13th place at seven-over par 223. Crist's opening round led the tournament field and spearheaded Miami to a first-place standing after the first round.
"Aaron's first round was a big highlight for us for the tournament," commented Lubahn. "He really came out ready to go to play as well as he did. Anytime you lead a tournament with those caliber teams, you can feel good about it."
Senior Ben Bastel recorded the best third-round score for the RedHawks, firing a 72 over the final 18 holes. Bastel finished in a tie for 17th place at nine-over par 225. He birdied five holes in the third round, including three of the last nine.
Sophomore Michael Drobnick finished in a tie for 20th place at 10-over par 226, while senior Anthony Cordes finished in a tie for 34th place at 13-over par 229.
"We just need to get to work and get better every day," added Lubahn. "We have three weeks until our next tournament, so we can work on things we need to improve upon to get ready for it."
Miami returns to action Sept. 22-23 at the Jim Colbert Intercollegiate.
