ATHENS, Ohio - Miami University's baseball team had its opening game of its three-game series against Ohio postponed after completing seven innings. The RedHawks and Bobcats will resume game one at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 10, before beginning a doubleheader 20 minutes following the completion of game one.
After both teams were retired in order in the first inning, the RedHawks struck first in the second inning. Junior Tommy Nurre was hit by a pitch to lead things off, before advancing to second base on a single through the left side by junior J.D. Mynhier. Both runners moved up a base on a wild pitch and then scored on a double into the left-center field gap by freshman Kyle Weldon. The double was the first of Weldon's career and it gave Miami a 2-0 advantage.
A three-run home run by Marc Krauss catapulted Ohio on top in the bottom of the fourth inning. Matt Stiffler reached on an error to start things off and then advanced to third base on a single by Jason Selhorst. Krauss then cleared the bases with a line-drive home run over the right field fence that gave Ohio a 3-2 lead.
Miami quickly tied it in the fifth inning as junior Josh Hula deposited the first pitch of the at-bat over the left field wall, tying the game at 3-3.
Ohio regained the lead in the sixth inning as a lead-off double by Selhorst hurt the RedHawks. With two outs and Selhorst on third base, Robert Maddox III blooped a single in between three RedHawk players in left-center field to put the Bobcats back on top, 4-3.
Miami took advantage of an Ohio miscue in the seventh and jumped back on top. With one out, freshman Adam Eaton reached on a dropped throw by the pitcher, bringing junior Jordan Petraitis to the plate. Petraitis drilled a three balls, one strike fastball over the center field wall, putting Miami ahead, 5-4.
Ohio responded with two runs in the seventh to jump back ahead, 6-5. A one-out triple by Stiffler plated one run and a two-out single plated Stiffler to place the Bobcats back in front. Following the final out of the seventh inning, the game went into a rain delay. Fifty-five minutes into the rain delay, the game was postponed and will be resumed at 1 p.m.
The RedHawks and Bobcats will still play a doubleheader on Saturday, May 10, with the first game of the doubleheader will begin 20 minutes following the completion of game one. The second game of the doubleheader will be played 40 minutes following the completion of game one of the doubleheader.
