11/20OXFORD, Ohio - Miami University men's golf coach Casey Lubahn announced today the signing of three future RedHawks to National Letters of Intent. Blake English (Charlotte, Mich./Charlotte), Ben Peacock (Marshall, Mich./Marshall) and Brett Tomfohrde (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) have all decided to continue their golf careers at Miami.
"This extraordinary group of young men has the ability, determination, intellect, and work ethic to significantly impact our program," said Lubahn. "I am proud of this class for many reasons. First, they are all fantastic young men and will represent this great university with the character, honesty, and integrity that will make our department, alumni, and fans proud. Second, they have all shown the ability to balance academics and athletics despite very demanding schedules. Lastly, they are champions in every sense of the word. They have proven themselves to be among the elite nationally and despite that, they are constantly thriving to be better tomorrow than they are today - which is all you can ask from any member of your program."
English has had a decorated amateur career so far, highlighted by winning the 2008 Michigan Junior Amateur Championship. He is also the three-time defending Michigan PGA Section Junior Champion, winning the 2008 crown after shooting 65-66. English finished fourth in the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division II Championships as a junior representing Charlotte High School. His father Ron played golf at Michigan State and coached both the men's and women's teams at Ferris State from 1979-1997.
"Blake is one of the most talented young men I have recruited in junior golf," said Lubahn. "He has tremendous power and an intense desire to excel at the highest level. Even considering his high national ranking and victories, I believe Blake is only beginning to tap into his potential as a player. His demeanor and work ethic will make him an immediate contributor to our team and I am very excited he has decided to join the RedHawk family." "Having a father who has competed and coached at the college level will help Blake's transition to Miami and I expect him to hit the ground running in the fall of 2009."
Peacock has made the MHSAA Division II All-State team in each of his first three seasons playing for Marshall High School. He is an accomplished player on the American Junior Association, with an eighth place finish at the 2008 AJGA Coca Cola Junior Championship at Boyne Highland, a ninth place finish at 2008 AJGA Scissortail Championship, a tie for ninth at 2008 AJGA Randy Wise Junior Open and a tie for second in the 2007 AJGA Medicus Preseason Junior Championship.
"Ben is a remarkably consistent player who shows maturity beyond his years," said Lubahn. "He has had five top ten finishes in only 10 career starts on the AJGA Tour, which is a strong testament to his preparedness and determination. He shows up ready to play each and every time out, which is the mark of a champion. When I came to Miami, Ben was immediately someone who stood out as a prospect because of his toughness and work ethic in the classroom and on the golf course. I look forward to watching Ben develop during his time in Oxford and chase his dream of playing the PGA Tour."
Tomfohrde won the 2008 Chick Evans Junior Amateur, shooting 69-66. He also had third place finishes at the 2008 FCWT Whistling Straits Classic and the 2008 FCWT Bear Creek East Open, as well as a tie for seventh in the 2008 Illinois State Junior Amateur. A terrific student, Tomfohrde holds a 4.4 GPA at Hindsale Central High School, and is very active in community service, volunteering in the Hinsdale Food Pantry and Athletes Committed to Excellence.
"Brett is a special young man," said Lubahn. "He has been so involved in the recruiting process and asking all the right questions. Since I have known Brett, his ability to prepare himself and focus on the details has separated him from many of his competitors. I have no doubt that with his intellect and drive to be the best, Brett will be a great addition to our program." "One of the really neat things about Brett is that not only does he have the physical skills necessary to play at this level, but he also embraces the process of becoming a champion. Many long hours are spent to get to the top, and I know Brett will be out there putting the work in."
