OXFORD, Ohio - Three student-athletes have signed National Letters of Intent to continue their volleyball careers as Miami RedHawks, head coach Carolyn Condit announced on Wednesday. They include Amy Kendall (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West), Christina Menche (Hamilton, Ohio/Hamilton) and Lisa Treadway (Dayton, Ohio/Chaminade Julienne).
"This class is one of our best when it comes to athleticism, exposure to great volleyball play during their high school years, and an understanding of what it takes to win," said Condit. "I am impressed with the competitive edge and tough-mindedness each of these athletes has shown during their high school and club seasons. They will fit well into our system and will demonstrate early how serious they are about competing and winning."
Kendall helped lead her Mizuno Sports Performance club team to a 16-1 record in 2008, including the championship at the Great Lakes Power League Tournament and a fifth-place finish at the AAU Open in Orlando. She was named to the all-tournament team at the JVDA Wisconsin Dells Tournament in March. Kendall is a four-year letterwinner at Glenbard West High School, where she has been named all-conference each of the last three seasons.
"Amy is a 6-2 setter who will be a presence at our net," said Condit. "More importantly she is very accurate, has strong hands, and possesses solid game intelligence. She has set for one of the finest club programs in the country in Sports Performance, meaning there is no doubt she has set some of the finest outside hitters in the country. Amy is going to add quality and depth to our setter position, and will go after a starting role. She is an intense worker and knows what it takes to win."
Menche is a four-year starter at Hamilton High School, which in 2008 ranked 15th in the state in aces, ninth in hitting percentage (.524), seventh in kills (206) and third in block average (1.3 per match). She has made first team All-Greater Miami Conference each of the last two seasons.
"Christina is one of my favorite local players," said Condit. "She is the first student-athlete from this area that we have signed at Miami during my tenure. She is very athletic and should prove to be effective for Miami as an outside or middle hitter. Christina helped Hamilton High School experience its one of its best seasons ever, and is a player who has just touched the tip of the iceberg in what she is truly capable of. In short time she will become an All-MAC performer."
Treadway helped lead Chamindae Julienne to a Greater Girls Catholic League Championship and the Ohio Sectional finals in 2008. She recorded 232 kills, 218 digs and 58 aces during her senior season, earning GGCL Player of the Year honors for the second straight season. Treadway participated in the Ohio Senior All-Star match in 2008. In 2005, she made the all-tournament team at the Junior National Tournament in Salt Lake City.
"Lisa understands the game of volleyball and plays like it. I am most impressed with her passing and defensive game, which reinforces my belief that she will help strengthen our backcourt," said Condit. "Lisa is the youngest of a family of volleyball athletes and will bring her savvy, leadership and game intelligence to Miami. She possesses superb ball control and was a standout outside hitter for her high school."
Miami volleyball has reached the final weekend of Mid-American Conference play. The RedHawks have two key matches in their quest to earn a first-round bye in next weekend's MAC Championship. Miami hosts Akron at 7 p.m. Friday. The RedHawks will then welcome Buffalo on Saturday for a 5 p.m. match. That match is senior night when Emily Schroeder, Melissa Zenz and Catherine Wolfe will be honored for their contributions to the program.
