OXFORD, Ohio - The Kent State University men's team and the University of Akron women's squad stand atop the standings after the first day of competition at the 2007 Mid-American Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The Golden Flashes tallied 47 points through four events, while the defending champion Zips posted 35 points through three events in their bid to become the MAC's first back-to-back women's outdoor champion since Ball State in 2000 and 2001.
On the men's side, Kent State dominated the field events, winning all three individual field events contested Thursday at the George L. Rider Track Complex. Andy Nicholas won his second straight MAC hammer throw title with a meet-record toss, while Phil Rickaby notched his third straight MAC javelin crown. Jeremy Brading also took home the conference's top spot in the pole vault, while decathlete Chris Caine, who leads the nine-athlete field through five events, has positioned himself for his second straight MAC decathlon title. Central Michigan's Jeff Powers took home the only other individual title contested on day one, as he placed first in the 10,000 meters.
On the women's side, Akron's Stevi Large turned in the most impressive individual performance, as she set a new meet, track and championship record in the hammer throw and won her second straight conference title in the event. Thursday's only other field event saw Eastern Michigan's Janice Keppler win the pole vault title, while Carime Reinhart of Ohio, who won the 2006 MAC Individual Cross Country Title, continued her impressive junior campaign with a first-place performance in the 10,000 meters. In the multi-events, Buffalo's Patrice Coney leads the heptathlon through four events.
