OXFORD, Ohio -- Junior forward Nathan Davis (Rocky River, Ohio) registered his third multi-point game of the season as he had a hand in all of Miami's goals in a 3-1 win over Canisius on Saturday night. Davis assisted on Miami's first two goals and scored the third as the RedHawks (3-1-0) outshot the Golden Griffins (0-3-0) 64-15. The last time Miami attempted more than 50 shots in a game was against St. Lawrence on Oct. 11, 2002.
Miami outshot Canisius 21-7 in the first period, but it was the Golden Griffins that went into the first intermission with the lead. Josh Heidinger gave his team its first lead of the series when he capitalized on a 5-on-3 power play and beat Miami's Jeff Zatkoff (Chesterfield, Mich.) with a one-timer from just below the right dot.
The game remained 1-0 until midway through the second period when sophomore Alec Martinez (Rochester, Mich.) connected for his first goal of the season on one of eight Miami power plays in the second period. Martinez's shot from the center point found its way through traffic and behind Andrew Loewen at the 13:17 mark. Loewen, making his first appearance as a collegian, turned away 61 shots in the game, including 28 in the second period alone.
With four seconds left in the second, sophomore Raymond Eichenlaub (Wilmette, Ill.) gave Miami a lead it wouldn't relinquish when he one-timed a Jarod Palmer (Fridley, Minn.) pass from behind the net between Loewen and the right post for a 2-1 Miami advantage.
After assisting on Miami's first two goals, Davis got into the scoring act with his first of the season at 14:24 of the third, a goal that made it 3-1 for the Red and White. Sophomore Justin Mercier (Erie, Pa.) moved the puck to Palmer behind the net, who skated the puck to the left corner before finding Davis alone on the doorstep for a one-timer just inside the right post.
Zatkoff turned away 14 of the 15 shots sent his way and improved to 1-1-0 on the season. Miami was 1-for-15 on the power play, while Canisius was 1-for-8. The teams combined for 28 penalties for 64 minutes.
Miami opens up Central Collegiate Hockey Association action next weekend when it travels to Ann Arbor, Mich., for a two-game series with the Michigan Wolverines on Oct. 19-20 at Yost Ice Arena.
NOTES: Nathan Davis has multiple points in three of Miami's four games this season ... Miami's record for shots in a game is 83, taken against Cincinnati during the 1978-79 season.
