OXFORD, Ohio--In a year where Miami University's athletic teams have enjoyed great success on the playing fields, its student-athletes also have achieved tremendous success in the classroom. Eleven of Miami's 19 athletic teams earned a term grade-point-average of 3.00 or better for the spring semester, with 17 student-athletes garnering 4.0 term GPAs to place their names on the President's List.
Highlighting a few of the outstanding accomplishments of the student-athletes, who earned 4.0s during the spring semester:
Senior women's soccer forward Ashley Swinehart, who was twice named the Mid-American Conference Player of the Year and was a two-time Academic All-American, graduated in May with a 3.99 GPA while majoring in speech communication. Swinehart was on the President's List seven of her eight semesters at Miami.
Miami's women's swimming and diving team had six student-athletes earn 4.0 GPAs during the spring semester, the most of any team this term. In February, the squad captured its fourth consecutive MAC Championship. Additionally, its senior class went undefeated in MAC dual meet action, posting a perfect 32-0 mark. Seniors Christel Frantz and Julie Madden, who were both on the President's List this semester, were part of the undefeated senior class.
Senior third baseman Brian Canada, one of two baseball players on the President's List for the spring semester, currently leads the Mid-American Conference with a .381 batting average. Canada and the MAC East Champion RedHawks attempt to earn the regular-season MAC title and No. 1 seed in the MAC Tournament with a three-game series at Kent State this weekend in the regular-season finale.
Senior distance runner David Mitchell earned All-America recognition in cross country and was the OCCCCA Division I Male Athlete of the Year. He has competed at the NCAA Championships in both track and field and cross country. Mitchell is one of two men's track and field student-athletes to earn President's List accolades this spring.
"The intellectual achievements of our students, while impressive, are not surprising," Director of Athletics Brad Bates said. "Miami is an institution where excellence is a lifestyle. Our coaches recruit quality scholars of high character who just happen to be exceptional athletes. While we celebrate these significant grade point averages as a gauge of academic success, the real value and benefit of the Miami experience to all of us is the development of future leaders in our communities. "
In the newly instituted Academic Progress Rating (APR) by the NCAA, Miami ranked second nationally among all Division I-A institutions.
Women's basketball led all Miami teams during the spring semester with a 3.37 team GPA, while men's cross country led all men's teams with a 3.12 GPA. Of Miami's 481 student-athletes, 255 (53 percent) earned a 3.0 GPA or higher for the semester, and 93 student-athletes garnered Dean's List status (3.50-3.99 GPA).
