FRISCO, Texas - Miami's senior synchronized skating team earned every first-place vote available in both Friday evening's short program and Saturday evening's long program, defeating three other squads to claim the Midwest Synchronized Championships near Dallas, Texas.
In the final standings, Miami's duo of first-place finishes were ahead of Western Michigan, the Hockettes skating club from Ann Arbor, Mich., and the Revolution skating club from the Chicago area. Miami's short program, designed from the movie The Italian Job around a scene called "The Chopper Chase," swept all nine judges' first-place ordinals. WMU's runner-up status was also unanimous, and the Hockettes and Revolution earned several third- and fourth-place votes each.
The long program, entitled "Venetian Fantasy," also swept all nine first-place ordinals. The judges were unanimous with the other three squads as well, placing WMU second, the Hockettes third and Revolution fourth.
Miami's senior squad is off from competition for two weeks until the Spring Cup in Milan, Italy, Feb. 11-13. The collegiate team resumes competition at the U.S. National Championships, Feb. 24-26 in Lowell, Mass., along with the senior team.
