Georgia Tech Wins Miami Volleyball Classic

OXFORD, Ohio--Georgia Tech (5-5) downed Middle Tennessee (3-7) and IPFW (7-4) in three games to capture the Miami Best Western/Scyamore Inn Volleyball Classic on Saturday. IPFW topped Miami (2-7) in three games, while Middle Tennessee outlasted the RedHawks in five games to round out the tournament.
GEORGIA TECH 3, MIDDLE TENNESSEE 0
Georgia Tech edged Middle Tennessee by three points in the first game, 30-27 and rolled to 30-19, 30-22 wins in the next two sets to seize the match in three games.
Trailing 12-18 in the first game, the Yellow Jackets staged a 10-0 run to capture a lead it would not relinquish. Georgia Tech extended its lead to five, 27-22, but Middle Tennessee went on a 5-1 run to pull within one of the Yellow Jackets, 27-28. A kill by Lynnette Moster and a block by Moster and Jayme Gergen iced the game for the Yellow Jackets, 30-27.
In the second game, Georgia Tech jumped out to a 10-3 lead and never looked back as it posted a 30-19 win. Laura Kuhn tallied five kills to lead the Yellow Jackets in the second game, while Andressa Lyra notched six kills for the Blue Raiders.
The third game was a close battle with Georgia Tech holding a one-point edge, 22-21, until going on an 8-1 run to win the match with a 30-22 Game Three win. The Yellow Jackets posted an impressive .455 hitting percentage in the third set and were led by Ulrike Stegemann and Jennifer Randall, who had five kills apiece in the game.
Middle Tennessee's Lyra tallied a match-high 20 kills. Moster led the Yellow Jackets with 13 kills and 10 digs, while Gergen posted seven blocks.
IPFW 3, MIAMI 0
IPFW hit .402 for the match as the Mastodons collected a 30-20, 30-19, 30-24 win over Miami in Saturday's second match of the tournament.
In the first game, IPFW took an early 10-5 lead and rolled to the 30-20 win. The Mastodons produced a scorching .515 hitting percentage in the game, led by Fabiana Souza who had seven kills and a .583 hitting percentage, and Nicole Howell, who had six kills and a .545 hitting percentage. Miami freshman outside hitter Jeanna Staun (Loveland, Ohio/Ursuline Academy) posted five kills and two service aces for the RedHawks.
Kills by senior outside hitter Angie Zent (Fort Wayne, Ind./Northrop), redshirt freshman middle hitter Kate Norris (Indianapolis, Ind./Bishop Chatard) and senior outside hitter Tara Buroker (Bluffton, Ohio/Bluffton) helped Miami establish a 10-8 lead. IPFW, however, went on a 9-0 run to post a 17-10 edge and a lead it would not relinquish as the Mastodons went on to take the second game, 30-19.
Off a service ace and kill by Staun and a kill from sophomore outside hitter Jordan Centers (Norwalk, Ohio/St. Paul), Miami took an early 4-1 lead. A kill by freshman middle hitter Carli Reihman (Cincinnati, Ohio/Ursuline Academy) and two more by Staun helped Miami push its lead to four, 8-4. IPFW knotted the game four times before rattling off three unanswered points to post a 19-16 lead. From there the Mastodons went on to win the match with a 30-24 Game Three win.
For IPFW, Souza led all players with 17 kills and notched five blocks. Howell and Lindsay Brammer added 10 kills apiece, while Claire Jackson notched six blocks and Brammer notched five.
Staun led the RedHawks with 11 kills, eight digs and four service aces, while Norris added nine kills and four blocks.
GEORGIA TECH3, IPFW 0
Georgia Tech completed its stint at the Miami Best Western/Sycamore Inn Classic by defeating IPFW in three games 30-18, 30-27, 30-21 to capture the tournament title.
Georgia Tech led from the onset of the first game and never looked back as it posted a 30-18 win over IPFW. Gergen and Moster amassed six kills apiece for the Yellow Jackets. Souza notched seven kills for the Mastodons.
Seven kills by Lauren Sauer in the second game helped Georgia Tech to the 30-27 win. The Yellow Jackets led by as many as seven late in the game, 27-20, but the Mastodons were able to pull within two, 27-29, with help from a Cynara Martins block. However, an IPFW attack error ended the Mastodon surge.
IPFW established an early 7-3 lead in the third game, but Georgia Tech went on a 7-2 spurt to take a one-point lead, 10-9. An Ashlee Roth kill knotted the game for the Mastodons, 10-10, however Georgia Tech went on a 7-0 run and never looked back as the Yellow Jackets won the match with a 30-21 Game Three triumph.
For Georgia Tech, Sauer amassed 15 kills, while Moster and Gergen posted 12 kills apiece. Moster also knocked down three solo blocks. Lindsey Laband compiled 43 assists in the winning effort.
Souza paced IPFW with 15 kills and three blocks, while Peachy Jankowski tallied a match-high 16 digs.
MIDDLE TENNESSEE 3, MIAMI 2
In a hard-fought match, Middle Tennessee prevailed over Miami, 30-23, 26-30, 26-30, 30-17 and 18-16 in the final match of the Miami Best Western Sycamore Inn Classic.
Zent opened the first game with back-to-back kills, but Middle Tennessee went on a 6-1 run and never looked back as the Blue Raiders posted the 30-23 win. Dara McLean and Tara Mikuzis each had seven kills for Middle Tennessee.
Two Alicia Lemau'u service aces helped Middle Tennessee to an early 7-3 lead, but Miami was able to tie the game, 11-11, off a Staun service ace. Following a 19-19 tie, Miami went on a 6-0 surge to post a 25-19 lead. Another Staun service ace, a pair of blocks by the Reihman/Zent tandem and two kills from Reihman sparked the RedHawks. The Blue Raiders pulled within two of Miami 26-28, but a Middle Tennessee attack error and a big block by junior setter Megan Clark (Solon, Ohio/Solon) and Norris iced the game for the RedHawks, 30-26. Reihman connected on all six attack attempts, making no errors for the RedHawks.
Despite trailing 4-12 early in the third game, Miami regrouped and chiseled away at the Blue Raider lead to knot the game, 20-20, off a block by Norris, Zent and Buroker. Kills by Clark and Norris helped Miami build a three-point cushion, 26-23, and eventually the RedHawks took the game, 30-26. Norris knocked down five block assists for the RedHawks who amassed 7.5 blocks as a team in the third game.
In the fourth game, Middle Tennessee took a commanding 15-7 lead and never looked back as the Blue Raiders posted the 30-17 Game Four win to send the match to a fifth set. McLean and Lyra each had six kills apiece for the Blue Raiders.
No team lead by more than a point in the fifth game until Middle Tennessee put the match away on a kill and block to win the set, 18-16.
McLean collected 25 kills and 10 digs, while Lyra notched 22 kills and 14 digs. Tara Mikuzis added 18 kills and 15 digs, while Lemau'u tallied a match-high 26 digs.
For Miami, Buroker and Reihman posted 14 kills apiece. Buroker added 13 digs and five blocks to her performance, while Reihman notched eight blocks. Zent added 12 kills, while Norris posted 10 kills and six blocks. Clark notched 48 assists and 10 blocks for the RedHawks.
