WESTERVILLE, Ohio-Miami University's golf team surged in the final round of the Mid-American Conference Championships after struggling through the first two rounds to jump two spots and finish in eight place. Sophomore Ryan Swelin (Sundre, Alberta/Sundre) finished at one-under par 215 for the tournament to tie for second place. Swelin finished just one stroke behind conference medalist Brad Heaven (Toledo).
The tournament was shortened from its four-round format to three rounds due to severe weather passing through the area on Friday. After the first two rounds, Miami trailed its nearest competitors by seven strokes, but put together a solid third-round effort to overtake Akron and Eastern Michigan by 15 and 11 strokes, respectively. The RedHawks' valiant final- round effort fell just two strokes short of seventh place and five strokes shy of sixth place. Toledo captured the tournament crown, winning the championship by a nine-stroke margin.
Individually for the RedHawks, Swelin shot 75-69-71=215 to lead Miami. Sophomore Matt Thomas (Blasdell, N.Y./Orchard Park) also shot a 71 in the final round and tied for 25th place at 11-over par 227. Senior Mark Weghorst (Carmel, Ind./Brebeuf Jesuit), who earned second-team all-Mid-American Conference honors, finished in a tie for 38th place at 16-over par 232, while sophomore Mike Calkin (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) finished one stroke behind Weghorst in 40th place.
