RedHawks Push Maryland to Five Games, Fall 2-3

COLLEGE PARK, Md.--Miami University's volleyball squad put forth a valiant effort against ACC Champion Maryland, taking the Terrapins to five games, 16-30, 30-25, 27-30, 30-25 and 9-15. This concludes the season for the RedHawks, who finish with a 9-18 record. The Terps move on to the NCAA Tournament with a 17-14 record.
Miami was within two of the Terps in the first game, 5-7, until Maryland went on a 7-1 run to post a 14-6 advantage. Hitting at a .394 clip, Maryland rolled to the 30-16 Game One win, including rattling off five straight points to take the set.
Maryland again took an early lead in the second game, holding a 5-1 edge. Kills by redshirt freshman middle hitter Kate Norris (Indianapolis, Ind./Bishop Chatard) and freshman outside hitter Jeanna Staun (Loveland, Ohio/Ursuline Academy) and a freshman libero Sydney Antonio (Holland, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy) service ace moved the RedHawks within one, 4-5. Miami battled the Terrapins to 8-8 and 12-12 ties but was unable to take the lead. Trailing 13-16, Miami staged a 6-0 run to post a 19-16 lead. Three consecutive junior setter Megan Clark (Solon, Ohio/Solon) service aces and two freshman middle hitter Reihman (Cincinnati, Ohio/Ursuline Academy) kills highlighted the run. The RedHawks were able to push their lead to six, 24-18 and held off Maryland as they captured the second game, 30-25.
Back-to-back kills by Reihman placed Miami at an early 6-3 lead in the third game. The teams went back and forth until Maryland went on a 4-1 spurt to claim a 27-23 lead. A block by senior outside hitter Tara Buroker (Bluffton, Ohio/Bluffton) and Reihman and a Staun service ace put the RedHawks within one, 27-28, but two Terrapin kills iced the third game for Maryland, 30-28.
Off a 6-0 run early in the third game highlighted by two Clark service aces, Miami jumped out to a 9-3 lead. A block by sophomore middle hitter Lauren Slusser (Columbus Grove, Ohio/Columbus Grove) and Staun put Miami at a 10-point lead, 19-9. The Terrapins chipped away at the RedHawk lead to move within one of Miami, 24-25, but the RedHawks went on a 5-1 surge to send the match to a fifth game with the 30-25 Game Four win.
The teams went back and forth early in the fifth game. With the score knotted 6-6, Maryland went on a 6-1 run to post a 12-7 advantage, which proved to be too much for the RedHawks to overcome as the Terps took the fifth game, 15-9.
Both Miami and Maryland had five players in double figures for kills.
For Miami, Reihman posted a team-high 15 kills and added 10 digs, while Buroker notched 10 kills and a team-best 20 digs. Staun also posted a double-double with 11 kills and 13 digs. Slusser posted 12 kills and a team-best four blocks, while senior outside hitter Angie Zent (Fort Wayne, Ind./Northrop) had 11 kills. Clark led all players with six service aces and also notched 28 assists and seven digs.
Maryland was led by Jennifer Dewalt with 16 kills. Beth Gillming posted a match-best 23 digs and added four service aces, whiel Rachel Wagener tallied 14 kills and a match-high eight blocks for the Terps.
